NORTON, Mass. - The Wheaton College men's lacrosse team dropped, 8-6, to the Salve Regina Seahawks Wednesday evening, hosted at Nordin Field.
The Lyons fall to 0-2 overall while the Seahawks advance to 3-0.
Salve Regina's Zach Makoske posted a hat trick during the game while Ethan Robson, Joe Madden, Eric Backus, Jake Gonzalez and Andrew Fera each tallied one goal. Wheaton was led by senior Will Morrison who registered one goal and two assists in the contest as senior Scott Whear notched a goal and assist. SophomoreCJ Leighton, senior Ryan Gjerset, sophomore Josh Talanian and sophomore Matt Morgan each went on to tally one goal.
Wheaton jumped on the board first when Morgan tabbed his goal of the game during the first three minutes. The Lyons defense would shut down the Seahawks until at 12:25 in the second quarter when Salve Regina responded to get on the board. The Seahawks would respond three more times before Wheaton broke through with 2:41 remaining in the second quarter off a goal from Leighton.
Opening play in the second half, the Lyons put themselves within one after Morrison found Talanian who slapped in a goal, pumping the score to 4-3. Right before the third quarter would end, Salve Regina would record two additional goals thanks to Robson and Gonzalez, but Wheaton would have the final say as Morrison earned his second assist after a pass to Whear who pushed through the goal making it 6-4.
It was the battle of the offense in the final quarter as Morrison jumped out first with a goal, off a pass from Whear. The Seahawks took it right back with a goal from Makoske who advanced them to 7-5. With 11:35 remaining, Gjerset would tab the final goal for Wheaton, but it would be Salve Regina who boosted the final goal of the game at 3:50 to seal the 8-6 victory.
Wheaton's first-year goalkeeper Colin Walsh collected nine saves for Wheaton as Salve Regina's Matt D'Amore listed 14.
Wheaton held the 28-26 advantage on ground balls and 40-27 edge on shots.
