Fast start helps Seahawks to victory

A 6-1 game after the first period was ultimately the difference maker for the visiting Salve Regina University (1-1) as they managed to hold on for the two-goal road win over the Adams State men's lacrosse team (1-2). Both teams had 23 shots on goal, but the visitors won the overall shots battle 45-32.
 
The Seahawks fast start thanks to scoring the game's first five goals before the Grizzlies managed to get on the board. Both teams came out the gate playing well on defense before the Seahawks scored at the 11:33 mark. They added another goal 93 seconds later to grab a 2-0 lead.
 
The momentum continued for Salve Regina as the team scored two more goals before the nine-minute mark of the first period. The fifth goal came with 7:05 to play in the opening frame for the visitors to give them a commanding 5-0 lead.
 
Ryan Young ended the Grizzlies drought with 6:04 to play in the first to get the home team on the board. Just over a minute later, the Seahawks got the goal back with their sixth of the game to go back up by five, 6-1.
 
Going into the second period the Grizzlies found themselves in a 6-1 hole but they never folded. Going forward for the rest of the game, the Grizzlies actually outscored the Seahawks 11-8 the rest of the game. Both teams scored four goals in the second period to make it a 10-5 game at the half.
 
Adams State found a rhythm to start the second frame and scored three-straight goals to get within two, 6-4. Young scored his second straight goal of the game at the 11:47 mark of the period to start the run.
 
Two minutes later, JD Van Arsdall added the second goal of the period and his second of the year on an assist from Jacob Austin. The third goal was on the efforts of Johnny Rosas who found the back of the net on a pass from Tanner Beck. The surge got the Grizzlies within two of the Seahawks, at 6-4.
 
The Seahawks finally responded and scored four unanswered goals to counter the Grizzlies and take a 10-4 lead. The score looked like it was going to be that at halftime, but Rosas and Beck teamed up again for the fourth Grizzlies goal of the period to make it a 10-5 game going into the break.
 
Coming out of halftime, Adams State once again had on offensive surge and scored a trio of goals before the Seahawks scored to start the second half. Kyle Butler the surge this time around with an unassisted goal at the 12:16 mark to make it a 10-6 game.
 
Kage Janes added the second goal for the Grizzlies after a penalty by the visitors gave the home team an extra man opportunity that they seized get within three goals with just over 8:30 to play in the period. Beck added the final goal of the Grizzlies run with 7:20 play with his first goal of the game and cut the score to 10-8.
 
Defense then picked up for both squads as they held each other scoreless for the next four minutes. It was not until the 3:14 mark when the Seahawks managed to add a goal on an extra man opportunity from a Grizzlies penalty. They scored their second goal exactly three minutes later before the end of the period to lead 12-8.
 
Adams State added four goals in the fourth but Salve Regina managed to put two into the net to hold off the Grizzlies near comeback at home. Janes started the fourth period with back-to-back goals for the Grizzlies, both of which came on assists from Rosas.
 
Salve Regina scored its first goal of the period with 8:42 to play in the fourth to stay out in front by a score of 13-10. Beck scored his second goal of the game two minutes later to keep the game in reach late.
 
The Seahawks added one last goal with just over six minutes left in the game which proved to be enough. Austin scored the final goal of the game for the Grizzlies at the 3:02 mark but they were unable to score again as the visitors held on for 14-12 win.
 
Beck led the offense in total points with five on two goals scored and a trio of assists. Rosas was one point back with four on a pair of goals and assists. Janes had the most goals with three total. Young and Austin each had two points. Young scored two goals, while Austin had a goal and an assist. In net, Connor Johnson tallied 14 saves for the afternoon.
 
Pat Leary led the offense for the Seahawks with five points all on goals. Niko Szelest, Joe Madden, and Brendan Kelly each had three points for the game. Szelest scored three goals for is total, while Kelly and Madded each scored two goals and notched an assist, respectively. Goalkeeper Griffin Ketcham had 11 saves in the win.
