NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. - Junior Sean Hughes (Old Saybrook, Conn.) and sophomore Billy Martin (West Islip, N.Y.) set the pace for Salve Regina as the Seahawks raced the 5 mile distance for the first time this season at the UMass Dartmouth Invitational.
Hughes and Martin worked their way toward the upper quarter of the field of 265 runners that included the No. 10-ranked Division III team in New England (WPI) and two teams that held regional rankings (Franklin Pierce, East Stroudsburg University) in the Division II preseason cross country polls.
Hughes crossed the finish line at 26:49, with Martin not far behind at 27:01. Freshmen Dave Napierkowski (Cheshire, Conn.) and Austin Sattler (Guilford, Conn.) ran at No. 3 and No. 4, finishing at 27:22 and 28:08 in their first collegiate race at the longer distance. Sophomore Daniel Regan (Westford, Mass.) rounded out the scoring at 28:35. The Seahawk scorers set a new program mark for the fastest five-man combined team time for 5 miles. Their time of 2:17:57.69 is more than four minutes faster than the previous team record, set at UMass Dartmouth in 2013.
Sophomore Jay Brennan (North Haven, Conn.) and freshman Andrew Sardelli (Hope Valley, R.I.) were the Seahawks' sixth and seventh runners, finishing at 28:55 and 29:08. Sophomore Anthony Tandy (Hopedale, Mass.) also represented Salve Regina in the varsity race, finishing at 30:19.
"This was a strong showing. Sean and Billy continue to lead the way, albeit with very different racing styles, and they continue to set the standard for performance on our team," said head coach Rob McGuinness. "David, Austin and Andrew had a fine effort in their first race at five miles, and Dan, Jay and Anthony delivered another reliable, consistent performance. Given a few more races, this lineup will really start to gel."
B.J. Smith of Franklin Pierce captured the individual title in 24:48. Franklin Pierce also won the team title with a score of 50 points. WPI was second with 100, ahead of Brandeis (105), SUNY New Paltz (134) and Bentley (148). Salve Regina posted a team score of 494 to finish 17th. The Seahawks placed ahead of 17 scoring teams.
