Salve Regina football debuted on the natural grass of Toppa Field on September 1992 against non-varsity competition. Just four years later, then-freshman and barefooted-kicker Ryan Sornberger drilled a game-winning 47-yard field goal to lift Salve Regina over Division II Bentley College, 38-35, as time expired. The Seahawks went on to win ECAC Bowl games in front of their Toppa faithful in 1998 and 2023.

Salve Regina softball also captured its second-straight Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) title in 2017 on the dirt and grass just a month before the facility underwent a major overhaul which included the installation of Field Turf.

This bigger, faster surface was friendly for Seahawk men's soccer to finish as the top seed in the league in back-to-back seasons and Toppa Field hosted postseason action. On November 9, 2019, Salve Regina scored a 3-2 double-overtime victory over Endicott for its fourth CCC championship, and first-ever at Freebody Park.
