#15 WPI widens gap in NEWMAC

WORCESTER -- Emma Nagy (Monroe, WASH.) drove in five runs, Virginia McKinney (Larchmont, N.Y.) scored five times and WPI pitching allowed just two runs all day as the Engineers swept a NEWMAC doubleheader from Salve Regina on Saturday at Rooftop Field. WPI captured the opener 11-2 in five innings before finishing off the sweep with a 10-0 victory in the nightcap.

The Engineers improved to 28-2 overall and 11-1 in NEWMAC play with the pair of wins. WPI entered the day ranked fifth in the first NCAA Division III NPI rankings of the spring and 15th in the latest NFCA/GoRout Division III Top 25 poll. Salve Regina slipped to 3-25 overalL and 0-12 in conference action.

Game 1

Salve Regina struck first in the opening inning as Emily Cronin (Coventry, R.I.) doubled down the right field line to plate Gracie Keyes (Portsmouth, R.I.).

WPI answered immediately with four runs in the bottom of the first. Latour singled and stole second before McKinney reached on an error and swiped second herself. Fairbairn followed with a two-run double before Nagy delivered an RBI single. Later in the inning, Stella Kozak (Auburn, N.H.) reached on an error that allowed Nagy to score and make it 4-1.

The Crimson and Gray added three more runs in the second. Sherwood and Jordan opened the inning with singles before Latour drove both home with a single to right. Nagy later added another RBI single to push the advantage to 7-1.

Salve Regina got one back in the third on an RBI fielder's choice by Emma Plourde (Stratham, N.H.), but WPI answered with two runs in the bottom half. Sherwood doubled home Kozak before Latour singled up the middle to score Sherwood and make it 9-2.

The Engineers ended it in the fourth as Nagy launched a solo homer and Ali Chalovich (Pittsburgh, Pa.) followed right after with a home run of her own.

Nagy finished 3-for-3 with a homer, three RBI and two runs scored while Latour went 3-for-3 with three RBI and a stolen base. Sherwood was 2-for-2 with a double, RBI and two runs scored. Fairbairn chipped in a two-run double and Boldebuck improved to 9-2 after allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits while striking out four.

Cronin paced Salve Regina by going 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI while Keyes added a hit and a run scored. Shea Murphy (Westfield, N.J.) took the loss after allowing 11 runs, nine earned, on 12 hits in four innings.

Game 2

WPI again wasted little time taking control in the nightcap striking for three runs in the bottom of the first.

Latour walked to begin the first inning before McKinney singled. After the pair moved up on a wild pitch, Nagy brought home Latour with a sacrifice fly. McKinney then stole home and Ariana Kreuzer (Walpole, Mass.) followed with an RBI single to make it 3-0.

The Engineers added two more runs in the second as Jordan singled and later scored on McKinney's RBI double. Nagy followed with another RBI single to stretch the lead to 5-0.

WPI broke the game open in the third. Kreuzer singled and Francisco followed with a base hit before McKinney lined a two-run single to center. Fairbairn then tripled to right to bring home two more runs and make it 9-0.

The Boynton Hillers added their final run in the fourth when Grace Grant (Orlando, Fla.) scored on a wild pitch after reaching on an error.

McKinney starred in the nightcap by going 3-for-3 with three RBI, three runs scored, a double and a stolen base. Nagy added two RBI while Fairbairn drove in two with a triple. Kreuzer collected a pair of hits and an RBI.

Merchant tossed a four-hit shutout and struck out two to improve to 17-0. Abby Merck (Lorton, Va.), Keyes, Plourde and Ryann Burke (Nutley, N.J.) each had a hit for Salve Regina. Caroline Peterson (Halifax, Mass.) suffered the loss after allowing 10 runs, nine earned, over four innings.
