NEWPORT, R.I. (April 3, 2026) -- Salve Regina University softball swept a pair against a Cambridge, Massachusetts, school on Tuesday at Toppa Field, but the tables were turned on Friday when the Engineers of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology took two in shortened contests in a fog-filled Newport, Rhode Island, during New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) competition.
Game 1 - MIT 12, Salve Regina 4 (6 innings)
In the opener, the Engineers (15-3, 3-1 NEWMAC) scored four in the first and another four in the second, both times bringing nine players to the plate.
Lauren Sundquist (Gladstone, Mich.) tripled in two in the first and
Holland Poe (Tampa, Fla.) tripled in a pair the next frame.
In the Seahawk second,
Skyla Oliveira's (Smithfield, R.I.) two-out single to third base put the Seahawks on the board with
Madeleine Oswald (Whippany, N.J.) crossing the plate.
MIT added two in the third for a 10-1 lead before Salve Regina scored an unearned run in the bottom, blanked the Engineers in the fourth, and pinch-hitterÂ
Victoria Geisser (Scituate, R.I.) singled in two runs for the Seahawks.
Sundquist doubled in a run in the sixth and came home for an eight-run lead on a
Julia Mattiace (Oak Park, Ill.) sacrifice fly.
Game 2 - MIT 11, Salve Regina 1 (5Â innings)
In the nightcap, sophomore
Layla Thiessen (Carlsbad, Calif.) led off the game with a single through the left side and took third base on a sacrifice bunt from classmate
Delaney Benevides (Plainville, Mass.). Seahawk starter
Caroline Peterson (Halifax, Mass.) got a grounder to
Abby Merck (Lorton, Va.) at third for the second out while Thiessen held the bag at third.
Arianna Kumar (San Diego, Calif.) beat out a single to shortstop for the game's first run. Poe singled through the right side for another RBI and then ran into an out but not before Sundquist scored to make it 3-0 MIT.
Emily Cronin (Coventry, R.I.) blasted a two-out double to left field in the Seahawks' (3-13, 0-4 NEWMAC) first but was stranded at second.
Peterson got a 1-2-3 inning out of the 7-8-9 batters in the Engineer lineup in the top of the second.
Thiessen and Benevides had back-to-back doubles in the third before a wild pitch advanced Benevides to third and she scored on a sac fly from
Ava Ladd (Austin, Texas). Kumar hit the third double of the inning for MIT and came home on Sundquist's single. Sundquist scored on a fielder's choice as Seahawk middle infielders
Cami O'Rourke (Brookfield, Conn.) and
Taylor Ferraiolo (Madison, Conn.) nearly turned an inning-ending double play.
Ladd and Kumar had RBI singles in the fourth for MIT before Cronin doubled in
Emma Plourde (Stratham, N.H.) for the lone Seahawk run in the bottom of the inning.Â
Kaaya Mehta (Plano, Texas) had an RBI pinch-hit double in the fifth and scored the final run on a wild pitch.
