Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Freshman defender Shelby Van Huysen (Killingworth, Conn.) netted the game winner with 9:56 left in overtime as the Western New England College field hockey team overcame a 2-0 deficit to win 3-2 over visiting Salve Regina in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) action on Saturdayat Golden Bear Stadium.
Western New England College improves its record to 3-10 overall and 2-3 in the conference. Salve Regina drops back to the .500 mark at 6-6 and 2-3 in TCCC play.
Salve Regina got on the board first with 10:17 remaining in the first half as junior forward Brittany Lopes (Lexington, Mass.) found sophomore forward Samantha Dalton (Falmouth, Mass.) who tipped it in for the 1-0 advantage.
The Seahawks took a 2-0 lead in the second frame with just under 10 minutes to play on a goal by freshman midfielder Kelly Allan (East Killingly, Conn.). Freshman forward Kelly Burke (Georgetown, Mass.) was credited with the assist.
Western New England College heated up with 6:23 left in regulation, which was ignited by a penalty corner. Van Huysen set up junior forward Kaela Jalbert (Turner, Maine) who cut the lead in half.
Two minutes later, the Golden Bears struck again off another penalty corner as junior forward Aimee O'Connell (Rome, N.Y.) assisted teammate Amy Hedberg (Guilford, Conn.) to tie it.
Western New England College was awarded with two more penalty corners in overtime, which later led to Van Huysen's game winner.
Sophomore goalie Lindsey Orszulak (Longmeadow, MA) had another solid game between the posts as she compiled 10 saves for the Golden Bears.
Salve Regina senior goalkeeper Devin Eppley (Darien, Conn.) finished with five saves.
