Box Score PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Sophomore forward Darius Debnam (Dorchester, Mass.) and freshman frontcourt mate Steve Roberts (New Haven, Conn.) each posted double-doubles as Rhode Island College earned its largest margin of victory this season in a 79-53 win over Salve Regina in men's basketball action on Tuesday evening at The Murray Center.
The Anchormen (5-3) win for the second straight game, while the Seahawks (0-7) efforts to secure their first win came up empty.
Debnam totaled 11 points and 12 rebounds, while Roberts, who hustled all over the floor, finished with 10 points, 12 rebounds, four blocks and two steals in 21 minutes off the bench.
Ten separate Anchormen finished with at least three points in the victory. Junior guard Antone Gray (Providence, R.I.) scored 11 points and dished out a game-high six assists, while freshman guard Derek Libbey (Lincoln, Maine) cashed in four trifectas for 12 points. Freshman guard Tahrike Carter (Brooklyn, N.Y.) handed out five helpers.
Rhode Island College never trailed in the game, building a 19-point, 30-11, lead with 4:36 left in the first half. The Anchormen went into intermission up by 12, 35-23.
A three-pointer by Salve Regina junior guard Ryan Birrell (Hope, R.I.) pulled the visitors to within three, 40-37, with 15:46 left in the game, only to see RIC quickly go back up by 10, 49-39, at the 12:39 mark. The lead for the hosts grew to a game-high 30 points, 79-49, with 1:55 left.
Salve Regina shot just 31 percent (17-for-55), while RIC recorded a 40 percent (29-for-72) mark. The Anchormen made 11-of-29 from downtown, grabbed 10 steals and swatted five shots away.
Salve Regina junior forward Dan Royce (Mahwah, N.J.) led all scorers with 24 points, while equaling Debnam and Roberts' efforts on the glass.
