Box Score NEWPORT, R.I. - A balanced scoring attack led Anna Maria College men's basketball over host Salve Regina University, 71-62, in The Commonwealth Coast Conference opener for both schools at the Rodgers Recreation Center.
Junior guards Junior De La Hoz [Lawrence, Mass.], Chris Pinsonault [Marlboro, Mass.], and junior forward Derek Johnson [Worcester, Mass.] led a 10-player scoring effort with their own double-figure totals.
Salve Regina (1-11; 0-1 TCCC) led by as many as eight (24-16) in the first half, but squandered that advantage after a Pinsonault layup capped a 7-0 AMCat run. De La Hoz swished a jumper to put Anna Maria up three (35-32) with less than a minute to go in the first.
A Jared Kelley [Winter Garden, Fla.] baseline jumper at the buzzer knotted the score at 36-36 when the teams broke for intermission. Graduate student Jabreche Boyd [West Haven, Conn.] commenced the second-half scoring with a fast break layup and the Seahawks enjoyed a lead during the first six minutes of the second period.
Freshman guard Anthony Click [Springfield, Mass.] grabbed an offensive rebound and fed fellow frosh Javier Bristol [Haverhill, Mass.] for the go-ahead layup (45-44 with 12:44 left). Boyd hit a 3-pointer from just to the right of the top of the arc to tie the score at 56-56 (3:14 left) before Anna Maria (6-6; 1-0 TCCC) went on a 12-2 run during which Pinsonault hit a pair of identical 3-pointers right in front of his bench.
Anna Maria beat Salve Regina in men's basketball for the first time since 2003, ending a 10-game drought against the Seahawks.
Boyd finished with 17 points for the Seahawks who were led in scoring by junior forward Dan Royce [Mahwah, N.J]. Royce registered his seventh double-double of the season while grabbing 16 rebounds. Both teams are in conference action on Tuesday with Salve Regina traveling to Regis College (7:30 p.m.) and Anna Maria hosting Gordon College.
