Neverett's goal stands up as Gordon outlasts Salve Regina, 1-0

Box Score

NEWPORT, R.I. - Junior Samantha Neverett (Atholm, Mass.) scored her 11th goal of the season 2:35 into the second half to lead the Gordon College field hockey team to a 1-0 win over Salve Regina University in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) action Tuesday afternoon at the Lawrence Avenue Field.

Freshman Anna Bury (Huntington, Md.) made one saves to earn the win for the Fighting Scots, who improved to 4-10 on the season while evening their conference mark at 3-3. The win was just the second in their last seven contests. The Seahawks, meanwhile, were shutout for the second time in two days and fell to 2-12 (1-5 TCCC) on the season.

After a scoreless first half which saw Gordon outshoot the Seahawks 5-1, Neverett put the Fighting Scots in front with her fourth goal in her last two matches. She fired a shot from just inside the circle and into the far left corner of the cage, just passed the outstretched leg of sophomore goalkeeper Helen Bohenberger (East Falmouth, Mass.).

The Gordon defense clamped down from there, holding the Seahawks to one second-half shot despite allowing five penalty corner opportunities. "We didn't have it today," said Salve Regina head coach Jen Eldridge. "We could have taken control of the game but we did not. This game is about opportunities and we are not capitalizing when we can. We have a few days to make adjustments and get back to it on Saturday."

Bohenberger (above) finished with six saves as the Seahawks were outshot 11-2 on the afternoon.

The Seahawks return to action on Saturday when they host Anna Maria at 1 p.m. at the Lawrence Avenue Field. Prior to the match, seniors Jillian Stanley (Watertown, Conn.), Brittany Lopes (Lexington, Mass.), and Lindsey Burt (Hopedale, Mass.) will be honored. The Fighting Scots host Becker this Thursday at 7 p.m.
