Box Score MIDDLETOWN, R.I. - Sophomore Kaitlyn Birrell (Hope, R.I.) and freshman Erin McCullough (Ludlow, Mass.) each recorded a goal and an assist to lead the Salve Regina University women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Gordon College in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) action Wednesday afternoon at Gaudet Field.
The win snaps a two-game losing skid for the Seahawks and a six match losing streak to the Fighting Scots (10-7-1, 6-6-1 TCCC). Salve Regina closes the regular season with a 10-8 overall mark and an 8-5 record in the conference, which makes it the No. 5 seed in TCCC Championship. The Seahawks advance to face No. 4 University of New England in the first round on Saturday in Biddeford, Maine.
McCullough (right) opened the scoring at 22:26 when she chipped home a rebound off a shot by Birrell that rang off the left post for her fifth goal of the season. Birrell pushed the lead to 2-0 when she potted her 19th goal off a cross from McCullough with under two minutes remaining in the half. Salve Regina held a 10-1 edge in shots at the break.
In the second half, the Fighting Scots cut their deficit in half at 61:18 when sophomore Karino Scavo (Mount Sinai, N.Y.) knocked in her eighth goal of the season. She collected the ball at the football 15-yard line, and her shot went over the head of Seahawks freshman goalie Jessica Lane (Marshfield, Mass.). Sophomore Caitlin Nedde (Colchester, Vt.) had Gordon's best chance to tie the match but banged her shot off the right post from in close.
Lane finished with four saves and ran her record to 9-5 on the season for SRU. Gordon freshman goalkeeper Kari Christianson (Standish, Maine) recorded six saves in defeat. The Seahawks finished the match with a 15-7 edge in shots.
"This is a pretty sweet win for us considering they beat us to end the regular season last year and then knocked us out of the playoffs," said Seahawks head coach Kerri Scroope. "We needed this game to lock up the fifth seed. (Elizabeth) Galla and Birrell have been magic for us all year, and they worked well again today. Jessica Lane continues to do a great job in net for us as well."
The Fighting Scots return to action on Saturday when they begin play in TCCC Championship on the road against an opponent TBD.
