AMHERST, Mass. - Mike Moher (Toronto, Ontario) scored twice in the opening period and Luke Arnold (Lincoln, Mass.) recorded three assists to lead the Amherst College men's ice hockey team during an 8-0 win over Salve Regina University Saturday afternoon at Orr Rink.

Nathan Corey (Anchorage, Alaska) made 17 saves and picked up the shutout for the Lord Jeffs (4-2-1) to improve to 1-0-0 on the season and 4-0-0 for his career, while Rob Campbell took the loss for the Seahawks (1-7-0) after surrendering the game's first three goals. First-year Ernest Foss made 56 saves in relief, but Amherst proved to be too much for the visitors.

Saturday's result marked Amherst's most lopsided victory since an 8-0 win over Fitchburg State on Jan. 2, 2010. This was only the second time this season Salve Regina had been shut out, as the Seahawks entered the game averaging 3.86 goals per contest. It was the second shutout recorded by the Lord Jeffs, who opened the season with a 4-0 win over Wesleyan.

The Jeffs entered the game having been outscored by a 7-5 margin in the opening period, but they put the puck in the back of the net early and often against Salve Regina to carry a 4-0 lead into the first intermission. It was the Seahawks, however, who had the first scoring chance on Saturday, as senior captain Joe Colaianni intercepted a pass and headed up the right wing in the opening minute of action. Colaianni delivered a centering pass to Chad Hollenshade , but the first-year's attempt missed wide right.

The rest of the period belonged to Amherst, with Elliot Bostrom (McLean, Va.) opening the scoring 1:53 into the contest. Bostrom received the puck all alone at the point, allowing him to rifle a shot that made its way through traffic and past Campbell for his first collegiate goal. Also picking up his first collegiate point on the play was Erik Hansen (Deephaven, Minn.), who shared credit for the assist with classmate Andrew Kurlandski (Kirkwood, Mo.).

The Jeffs' next two goals were separated by only 29 seconds, with Moher scoring on a power play at 4:51 before Kevin English (West Seneca, N.Y.) made it a 3-0 game to chase Campbell from the contest at 5:20. Moher added a second goal with only 6.3 seconds remaining in the period, capitalizing on a rebound after Amherst hit the left post.

Junior defenseman Mike Baran (Duxbury, Mass.) bumped Amherst's lead to 5-0 3:54 into the second period when he beat Foss on a shot from the left circle, with assists going to Mark Colp (Wareham, Mass.) and Arnold. The Jeffs nearly gave a goal away thanks to a careless turnover in their end, but Salve Regina's David Watkins was denied by Corey, who bailed out his defense.

The Seahawks had a pair of power play opportunities in the final 7:11 of the second period but could not register a shot on either one, allowing the Jeffs to put together several breakaway and 2-on-1 situations. The hosts eventually made it a 6-0 game with only 36 seconds on the clock when Ryan Edwards (Rochester, N.Y.) and Arnold worked a beautiful 2-on-1, with Edwards providing the finishing touch for his first collegiate goal. Seconds later Amherst co-captain Eddie Effinger (Belleville, Ill.) picked someone's pocket in the neutral zone and skated in untouched, but his breakaway attempt was knocked away by Foss to close out the period.

Amherst continued to apply pressure early in the third frame, as the Jeffs capitalized on a quick counterattack when Arnold fed Colp to make it a 7-0 game 48 seconds into the period. Sophomore forward Dylan Trumble (Calgary, Alberta) closed out the scoring with 7:39 left to play when he put home a rebound after Foss knocked down an initial shot by Kurlandski.

The Seahawks will host Southern New Hampshire tomorrow at 4:45 p.m. The Lord Jeffs will not return to action until January, when they kick off the New Year by hosting the Ben McCabe Tournament. Amherst will take on Wesleyan University Sunday, Jan. 2 at 4 p.m. after Trinity and Connecticut College square off at 1 p.m.
