Colaianni's two goals propel Seahawks to first win of the season

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Senior forward Joe Colaianni (Monroe, N.Y.) and sophomore forward William Gomolinski (Western Springs, Ill.) each scored two goals as the Salve Regina men's hockey team defeated Western New England College 7-5 for its first win of the season Saturday (Dec. 4) at Smead Arena.

 

The Seahawks, who lost twice to WNEC last season, are now 1-5 overall and 1-2 in the ECAC Northeast. The Golden Bears fall to 3-4-1 and 1-3 in the league after dropping their fourth straight outing.

Colaianni, who added three assists for a five-point performance, netted what proved to be the game-winner at 8:56 of the third period.

 

The game was tied 2-2 after the opening period and again at 4-4 when WNEC junior forward Kory Grahl (San Diego, Calif.) scored at 17:24 of the second period.

 

Gomolinski fired in a shot with 32 seconds left in the stanza to give SRU a 5-4 advantage.

 

Colaianni then delivered what proved to be the game-winner at 8:56 of the third period. Things got interesting in the final minute when senior forward Bryan Russell (Essex Junction, Vt.) scored an empty net goal at 19:31 before junior forward Mike Kaselouskas (East Longmeadow, Mass.) scored the final goal for the Golden Bears just seven seconds later.

 

Kaselouskas and Grahl each finished with a goal and assist while freshmen forwards Chris Connors (Albany, N.Y.) and John Kelly (Long Island, N.Y.) each contributed a pair of assists.

 

Russell, junior defenseman Henry DeSimone (Burlington, Mass.), and freshman forward Chase Davis (Weatherford, Texas) each collected a goal and assist. Freshman defenseman Chad Hollenshade (Lutherville, Md.) contributed three assists.

 

SRU freshman goalie Ernest Foss (Rochester, N.H.) compiled 41 saves, including 24 in the final period, for his first collegiate victory. Sophomore T.J. Fatse (Hampden, Mass.) started for the Golden Bears and compiled 26 saves before freshman Eric Sorenson (Rochester, N.Y.) came in relief to stop 10 shots in the final 20 minutes.
