Rams rally from three-goal deficit to tie SRU, 4-4

Box Score

PORTSMOUTH, R.I. - Senior Patrick Bambery (Braintree, Mass.) scored three goals and junior Joe Colaianni (Monroe, N.Y.) added a goal and an assist as the Salve Regina University men's ice hockey team skated to a 4-4 tie with Suffolk University in Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Northeast action Wednesday night at Portsmouth Abbey Arena.

Senior Niles Moore (Columbus, Ohio) netted a pair of goals for the Rams (7-10-3, 3--4-22 ECAC), who rallied from a 4-1 third period deficit to earn the point. The Seahawks (1-18-1, 0-8-1 ECAC), meanwhile, snapped an 18-game losing skid and look to carry that momentum into Saturday evening's home game against in-state rival Johnson & Wales.

Just seconds after the Seahawks had a goal disallowed, Bambery potted his ninth of the season and sixth on the power play off a pass from Colaianni at 9:31 of the opening stanza to give the Seahawks a 1-0 lead. Suffolk knotted the game at one on freshman Matt Robertson's (Whitman, Mass.) third of the season at 11:51. Late in the period, Bambery fed Colaianni for his sixth of the season at 12:48 to put the Seahawks back in front, 2-1.

In the second, Bambery was denied on a breakaway by junior goalie Jeff Rose (Collinsville, Conn.), who made a glove save on a shot that was ticketed for the right corner. Minutes later, junior Billy Sabia (Ridgefield, Conn.) stripped a Suffolk defender of the puck and fed Bambery, who broke in alone once again and beat Rose with a wrist shot to put Salve Regina in front 3-1 at 7:12. He completed the hat trick on a nice pass from freshman Jonathan Cox (Norwalk, Conn.) 32 seconds into the third period. Sabia picked up the second assist on Bambery's 11th goal of the season.

The Rams fought back to cut the deficit to 4-3 with just over 10 minutes remaining in the third before getting the equalizer late in the period. Moore scored the first of his two goals at 2:48 of the period, and freshman Andrew Flynn (Stamford, Conn.) netted his sixth of the season at 9:56 to slice the deficit to one. Moore's 11th of the season at 18:08 capped the comeback.

"This is not the result we wanted. We outworked them for 60 minutes, and we outworked them in the third period in ways we didn't in the first 40," said Salve Regina head coach Andy LeColst. "We outworked them east-to-west instead of north-to-south in their end, but we tried to get fancy. Even when we scored the fourth goal, it was not done the way we wanted to. Yes, the result was nice - we put the puck in the net and went up 4-1 - but we got fancy."

Ross finished the night with 18 saves while senior Ryan Comerford (Merrimack, N.H.) recorded 21 saves for Salve Regina, which went 2-for-5 on the power play. Suffolk finished the evening 1-for-3 with the man advantage.

The Seahawks contest against Johnson & Wales is set for 7:15. Suffolk travels to Curry for a 4:35 contest on Saturday.
