Box Score NEWPORT, R.I. - Senior guard Windell Hinkson (Groton, Conn.) led all players with 17 points in just 20 minutes of action as Salve Regina University men's basketball defeated the United States Coast Guard Academy, 75-61, in non-league action in Newport.
Hinkson made his first 3-point attempt of the game at 18:54 which broke a 2-2 score and gave the Seahawks the lead for good.
After senior guard Adam Radtke (Valley City, Ohio) sank a jumper with 5:43 left in the first half to bring Coast Guard within one (26-25), Salve Regina finished the half with a 22-5 run. Seahawk freshman Joshua Fuhrmeister (Bonn, Germany) swished a pair of 3-pointers during the run which culminated with Hinkson converting an old-fashioned three-point play with one tick on the clock.
In the second half, Salve Regina (6-5) twice enjoyed 20-point leads. First, when Hinkson connected on a jumper in the Seahawks' first possession of the second period; and later when freshman Jeff Bielefeld (Littleton, Mass.) sank a pair of free throws (71-51 at 3:47). In between, the Bears got as close as nine points when freshman Kevin Sowers (Monrovia, Md.) made a free throw.
Sophomore forward Greg Marshall (Gaithersberg, Md.) led the visitors with 16 points while Sowers finished with 11 points and sophomore guard Ed Gailor (Lancaster, Pa.) contributed 10 points in a reserve role.
In their first meeting in nearly 20 years (last meeting: Feb. 5, 1991), the Bears and Seahawks matched each other on the boards, 38 rebounds apiece. Seahawk senior forward Dan Royce (Mahwah, N.J.) led all players on the glass with seven rebounds; he also finished with 13 points.
Fuhrmeister finished with 11 points while Seahawk senior point guard Ryan Birrell (Hope, R.I.) equaled his season-high with eight assists.
Salve Regina next plays at Anna Maria College on Saturday to begin its The Commonwealth Coast Conference portion of its schedule. Coast Guard (5-5), which has suffered four of its losses to TCCC schools this season, hosts Clark University on Wednesday to commence its conference (New England Men's and Women's Athletic Conference) schedule.
