Seahawks stay undefeated in conference play with first ever win over Gulls

Box Score

NEWPORT, R.I. - Junior Kaitlyn Birrell (Hope, R.I.) had both a goal and an assist, while senior Maggie Kane (Bangor, Maine) scored the game-winning goal on a penalty-kick to lift the Salve Regina women's soccer team to a 3-2 victory over Endicott College during a Commonwealth Coast Conference contest at Reynolds Field on Saturday afternoon. This was the Seahawks' first ever victory over the Gulls and helped improve their overall mark to 8-2 while they remain unbeaten in the conference with a 4-0 record. The loss drops the Gulls to 6-4 on the season, and 3-1 in CCC-play.

"I am so proud of these kids," said Salve Regina head coach Kerri Scroope. "They played a great team today, a team we have never beaten before. When I recruited these seniors four years ago we had a few goals and beating Endicott was one of them. The kids put it all on the line today, they played hard and with a lot of heart. This win represents the dedication all 24 kids have put in since the beginning of the year."

The Seahawks struck first when Birrell fed senior Liz Galla (Beacon Falls, Conn.) in the 16th minute to give Salve Regina a 1-0 advantage.

Birrell and the Seahawks were back at it less than five minutes later, as the talented forward found the back of the net with an unnassisted tally to extend SRU's lead to 2-0.

The 2-0 lead held up until halftime despite the Gulls holding a decisive 12-6 advantage in shots.

It didn't take long for Endicott to answer in the second half, as sophomore Nicole Fournier (Milford, Mass.) scored an unnassisted goal just 1:12 into the period to cut the Seahawks' lead in half, 2-1.

Salve Regina responded when Kane knocked home her third penalty-kick of the week to put the Seahawks on top 3-1.

Fournier added her second goal of the game in the 68th minute to help Endicott claw back within a goal, but it was too-little-too-late, as the Seahawks held on for the 3-2 victory.

Both teams return to non-conference action Wednesday at 3:30 p.m., with the Gulls hosting Tufts, and the Seahawks welcoming UMass Boston.
