NEWPORT, R.I. - Freshman Brittany Hawkins (Hamstead, N.H.) compiled five points on two goals and an assist to help lead the Gordon College field hockey team to a 3-2 victory over Salve Regina University at Lawrence Field on Tuesday afternoon. The loss drops the Seahawks to 5-11 overall and 1-8 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC), while the Scots improve to 8-11 on the season and 3-6 during CCC play.

The Scots jumped on the board first with an unassisted tally by Hawkins in the 13th minute of play. Hawkins collected a rebound in front of the net and knocked it home to give Gordon the early 1-0 lead.

The Seahawks responded with the equalizer in the 21st minute when sophomore Heather Kapatoes (Hopedale, Mass.) gathered a loose ball in front of the box and beat the Gordon goalkeeper to tie the game at one goal apiece.

Gordon regained the lead roughly five minutes later as Hawkins drove down the end line and set up senior Samantha Neverett (Athol, Mass.) for the go ahead goal to send the Scots into the break holding a 2-1 advantage.

Coming out of the intermission, the Seahawks wasted no time in tying the score. Gaining possession off a corner, freshman Alexander Rizzo (Hopedale, Mass.) fed senior Michelle Massey (Mendon, Mass.) just inside the arc for a long game-tying goal just over a minute into the second half.

However, Hawkins gave the Scots the lead for good in the 44th minute, redirecting a shot by junior Melinda Fowler (Winslow, Maine) for the game-winning goal.

Sophomore Anna Bury (Huntingtown, Md.) earned the win in net for the Scots, while freshman Murphy McCann (Westerly, R.I.) made a game-high 12 saves in a losing effort for Salve Regina.

Both teams will return to action on Saturday at 1 p.m. with the Scots hosting Western New England and the Seahawks welcoming UNE during Senior Day at Gaudet Field.
