Strong second half leads Scots past Seahawks

Box Score

WENHAM, Mass. - The Fighting Scots improved to an even 7-7 overall with a 4-1 victory over the visiting Seahawks of Salve Regina University in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) field hockey action on Saturday.

Finding themselves down 1-0 in just the eighth minute after Salve Regina's Kelly Burke (Georgetown, Mass.) netted an unassisted goal for the early lead, the Scots' Melanie Landis (Quakertown, Pa.) tallied the unassisted equalizer in the 20th minute to make it a 1-1 game.

With the score still deadlocked at the break, a determined Scots squad turned on the offensive heat in the second half, scoring their first of three in the stanza when Samantha Neverett (Athol, Mass.) buried the go-ahead less than one minute into the half.

Just 30 seconds later, Clara Baker (Underhill, Vt.) widened the gap after finishing a Neverett pass in front of the net to give Gordon the 3-1 advantage.

After attacking the Salve Regina net for the remainder of the half, Gordon's Karli Balmer (Perkasie, Pa.) added one more for insurance, slotting home a Brianne Gilbert (Windsor, Conn.) assist for the 4-1 lead and eventual win.

Keeper Anna Bury (Huntongtown, Md.) turned away five from between the pipes for Gordon, while Murphy McCann (Westerly, R.I.) tallied an impressive 14 saves in the loss for the Seahawks.

Gordon returns to play on Monday, October 10, hosting Endicott College in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) matchup at 4:00 p.m. Salve Regina, now 4-7 overall, travels to Nichols on Tuesday, October 11 for a 7:00 p.m. start.
