Birrell nets pair of goals to lift Seahawks to 2-1 victory over Scots

Box Score

WENHAM, Mass. - Junior Kaitlyn Birrell (Hope, R.I.) scored a pair of goals to lift the Salve Regina University women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Gordon College on Saturday. The win improves the Seahawks to 10-3 overall and a perfect 5-0 during conference play, while the Scots move to an even 6-6 overall (3-3 in conference) on the season.

The Scots were left to combat an early deficit after Salve Regina's Kaitlyn Birrell buried an unassisted goal from inside the area in just the seventh minute to give the Seahawks the 1-0 advantage.

Despite several quality scoring opportunities throughout the remainder of the half, Gordon was unable to find the back of the net and went into the break still trailing by one.

The equalizer did come in the 52nd minute, however, when Hannah Midwinter (Barkhamsted, Conn.) carried the ball down the right side of the field and crossed to Jane Dietrich (West Hartford, Conn.) in the center of the goal mouth. Dietrich then connected the ball back to a waiting Karina Scavo (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.), who ripped a shot far post to make it a 1-1 game.

With both teams sparring for the go ahead goal, it was Salve Regina's Birrell who netted what proved to be the game-winner in the 71st minute after blasting a shot near post from the left corner of the area to lift the Seahawks to the win and preserve their CCC unbeaten streak.

Keeper Kari Christensen (Standish, Maine) recorded 12 saves for Gordon on the day while Jessica Lane (Marshfield, Mass.) turned away eight for Salve in the win.

The Scots return to play on Tuesday, October 11 as they travel to Plymouth State for a 4:30 p.m. non-conference tilt. Salve Regina, now 10-3 overall on the year, travels to Nichols for a CCC match on the same day at 3:30 p.m.
