NEWPORT, R.I. - Salve Regina University women's tennis won its first match of 2011 with a 9-0 score over visiting Gordon College. The victory evened the Seahawks' season record at 1-1 overall as well as in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC). The Fighting Scots (0-2; 0-2 CCC) have dropped their first two matches.
Freshmen Megan Olson (Colchester, Vt.) and Erica Shay (Concord, Mass.) cruised to an 8-0 win at third doubles to start the day. Freshman Elizabeth DiFilippo (West Chester, Pa.) and senior co-captain Nichol Stevens (Chester, Conn.) took the win at first doubles with an 8-2 score.
At second doubles, Gordon took an early 2-0 lead after sophomore Alyssa McCarthy (Rehoboth, Mass.) held serve in the second game which featured nearly a dozen duece points. Salve Regina's Annie Mallin (Fairfield, Conn.) and Karlee Walther (Natick, Mass.) rallied back with a mix of lobs and net play to take a 7-5 lead before holding on for an 8-6 victory.
Stevens earned the first singles victory at first singles, followed quickly by sophomore Elizabeth Liguori (Westerly, R.I.) at fifth singles. Shay made it a 6-0 score without dropping a game at sixth singles.
DiFilippo earned her first collegiate singles victory with a 6-0,6-2 decision at second singles. Sophomore Ana Gwozdz (Taunton, Mass.) battled back from a 4-1 hole in the first set and defeated McCarthy at third singles (6-4,6-4).
Junior Shannon O'Brien (Gorham, Maine) completed the team sweep with a 6-2,6-4 win at fourth singles for the Seahawks.
Salve Regina has three dual matches in the week ahead in addition to hosting the 28th annual Women's Grass Court Doubles Championships at the Tennis Hall of Fame a week from today. Gordon hosts Bridgewater State University on Monday in a match re-scheduled from last week.
