Golden Bears claw past Seahawks in overtime

Box Score
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Senior defender Kathleen Jasinski (Templeton, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal just 3:33 into overtime to lead Western New England to a 3-2 victory over Salve Regina on Saturday (Sept. 17) in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) opener for both teams.

The Golden Bears improve to 2-4 (1-0 CCC) after claiming the second straight win; while the Seahawks slip to 2-4 (0-1 CCC).

Salve Regina would strike first as senior defender Michelle Massey (Mendon, Mass.) converted on a penalty stroke at 11:01.

Western New England equalized with just under a minute remaining in the opening half when junior forward Caitlin Foster (Hyde Park, N.Y.) scored off a feed from sophomore forward Sarah Race (Cazenovia, N.Y.).

Race gave the Golden Bears their first lead of the afternoon as she scored at 66:21 to make it 2-1.

The Seahawks quickly answered back at 68:12 as sophomore midfielder Stephanie Rielly (North Grafton, Mass.) leveled the score at 2-2 on an assist from Massey.

Salve Regina applied pressure early in the first overtime period, but it was WNE who was able to capitalize on counter attack as Jasinski tallied the game winner on a rebound effort after sophomore midfielder Kim Perez (Westfield, Mass.) had her chance turned away by Salve Regina freshman goalkeeper Murphy McCann (Westerly, R.I.).

The Golden Bears held a 20-14 edge in shots, and held a decisive 17-6 advantage in penalty corners.

Junior goalkeeper Kaitlyn Hall (Pawtucket, R.I.) made six saves to record the win in net; while McCann had 10 saves in the losing effort.

Western New England returns to action on Tuesday (Sept. 20) as they travel to Mount Holyoke for a 7:00 p.m. non-league contest. Salve Regina will travel to Daniel Webster at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
