Seahawks capture sixth straight win with 6-1 victory over Lions

Box Score

QUINCY, Mass. - Eastern Nazarene gave up a season high six goals to the visiting Seahawks of Salve Regina in Saturday's Commonwealth Coast Conference match.

When the whistle blew to start the match, Salve Regina made it clear how the game was going to go; they set the tempo for the day.  The Lions couldn't seem to counter that tempo, allowing the Seahawks a goal in the opening three minutes of the contest. Junior Kaitlyn Birrell, who seemed to have magical chemistry with her teammates all day, received a perfect cross from senior Liz Galla, to net the Seahawk's first score.

Salve Regina tacked on their second goal a mere 30 minutes later, on a Birrell breakaway. Her offensive prowess allowed her to finish the match with an impressive two goals, and an assist.

Shortly after taking the 2-0 lead, the Seahawks posted their third and final goal of the first half at 27:16 when sophomore Erin McCullough received a tricky through ball pass from senior teammate Liz Galla. McCullough would punch the ball into the right corner of the net, past the Lion's defense.

With a fresh 45:00 on the scoreboard, ENC was hoping they could rally for another  outstanding comeback. The Lions came out strong, but Salve Regina proved they had no intentions of letting the Lions back in Saturday's match when Galla, who was set up beautifully by Birrell on a fast break, buried another Seahawk goal into ENC's net.

After another solo goal by McCullough and an easy penalty kick goal taken by senior Maggie Kane's right foot, the Seahawks lead the Lions six to nil with less than twenty minutes to go in the game. Despite the large deficit, Eastern Nazarene did not pack it in, but left everything out on the field, erasing the zero off the scoreboard with a successful penalty kick at 81:02 from senior Jackie Greenwood.

The Lions got just eight shots off in the contest, including five on goal. Freshman Tina Corey led ENC with three shots in the match.

When the clock hit zero, the final score read Salve Regina University 6, Eastern Nazarene College 1. The Lions hope to put Saturday's loss behind them and focus on making a statement in their next match on Monday, September 19th against Mitchell College at 4:00p.m. The Seahawks take on Wesleyan (Conn.) on Tuesday, September 20th at Gaudet Field.

With the win, SRU improves to 6-1 on the season. ENC falls to 4-3, with two losses coming against CCC opponents.
