Box Score NEWPORT, R.I. – The Salve Regina University field hockey team overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit with three second half goals to defeat Eastern Connecticut State University by a score of 3-1 at Gaudet Field on Saturday evening. The Seahawks are now off to their first 2-0 start since the 2000 season, while the Warriors currently sit at 0-2 on the year.
Freshman Alexandria Rizzo (Hopedale, Mass.) paced the Seahawk attack with two goals on the evening, while senior Samantha Dalton (Falmouth, Mass.) scored the game-winning tally. Senior Michelle Massey (Mendon, Mass.), junior Kelly Burke (Georgetown, Mass.), and freshman Erin Massey (Mendon, Mass.) each dished-out an assist, while goalkeeper Murphy McCann (Westerly, R.I.) made four saves in net to improve to 2-0 on the year.
Senior Rochelle Normandin (South Windsor, Conn.) scored the lone goal for the Warriors, while Elise Zarcaro (Enfield, Conn.) earned the team's only assist. Junior Hannah Collier (Watertown, Conn.) led all players with four shots, while senior goalkeeper Danielle Reichardt (Ocean Township, N.J.) made a game-high five saves in a losing effort .
Despite the Seahawks compiling an 8-4 advantage in corners and a 5-3 edge in shots during the first half, it was Eastern Connecticut who took a 1-0 lead into the break after Normandin found the back of the net off a feed from Zarcaro at the 29:37 mark.
The 1-0 lead held up until more than midway through the second half when Michelle Massey assisted Rizzo on the game-tying score.
The Seahawks were back at it less than three minutes later, as Dalton found the back of the net off a fine pass from Burke to put SRU ahead by a score of 2-1.
Rizzo capped the 3-1 win with her second goal of the game in the 67th minute after receiving a pass from Erin Massey.
The Warriors will be back in action on Thursday when they host Connecticut College at 6:00 p.m., while the Seahawks return to the field on Tuesday to face Salem State at Gaudet Field starting at 7:00 p.m.
