Box Score NEWPORT, R.I. - Junior forward Mike Engemann (Red Bank, N.J.) made six 3-pointers and scored a game-high 27 points to lead visiting Roger Williams University men's basketball to a 75-72 victory over Salve Regina University in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action.
Salve Regina (9-7; 7-2 CCC), which held the league's leading scorer - Pat Flanagan (Somerville, Mass.) - four points below his season average, got a 21-point effort from its sophomore guard Isiah Pringle (New York, N.Y.). Graduate student Ryan Birrell (Scituate, R.I.) and sophomore forward Scott St. Lawrence (Litchfield, N.H.) both scored in double figures as well, with 17 and 12 points, respectively.
After St. Lawrence opened the game with a jumper in the paint in the first minute, Engemann hit consecutive threes before Flanagan followed with back-to-back short jumpers for an 8-2 Hawks lead.
Pringle hit his first 3-pointer at 16:01 which started a 12-4 run for the Seahawks. Sophomore Patrick Dinneen (Medfield, Mass.) had a layup and 3-pointer during the run.
Flanagan's free throws at 11:40 started a 19-9 run for Roger Williams (9-7; 5-4 CCC) over eight minutes and the Hawks finished the run with their largest lead of the game, 10 points. Three free throws (say that five times fast) by Pringle cut the Seahawk deficit to five (35-30), but Flanagan added a jumper just before the break for a seven-point halftime advantage.
The Seahawks had a 10-4 run over nearly five minutes early in the second period, including two baskets from sophomore Jeff Bielefeld (Littleton, Mass.), but the Hawks expanded a three-point advantage (46-43) back to eight with a 7-2 run including a trey from Engemann at 11:33.
Then during the next four minutes, Birrell led the Seahawks on a 16-7 run with eight points and assists on a Joshua Fuhrmeister (Bonn, Germany) 3-pointer and a St. Lawrence fastbreak layup that put Salve Regina up 61-60.
Following a timeout, Roger Williams went ahead on consecutive 3-pointers from freshman forward Joseph Henry (Medway, Mass.) and Engemann. Engemann and Pringle traded 3-pointers to put the score at 70-68 in favor of the visitors with 2:48 on the clock. Freshman guard Adam Cook (Manasquan, N.J.) had an offensive rebound putback before Birrell returned the game to a two-point margin with a pair of free throws.
A steal by Pringle eventually led to a game-tying jumper by St. Lawrence (72-72 with 2:14 remaining), but Salve Regina would score no more. Engemann had the go-ahead layup after driving the lane at 1:52 and then added a free throw at ten seconds remaining for the final.
Salve Regina next plays on Wednesday at Endicott College while Roger Williams travels to Eastern Nazarene College for an 8 p.m. tip-off.
