Box Score MIDDLETOWN, R.I. - Salve Regina University field hockey had three goals from three different players in the first half on its way to a 5-2 victory over Western New England University in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at Gaudet Field.
Junior Heather Kapatoes (Hopedale, Mass.) put in a rebound at 4:44 for a 1-0 Seahawk lead. Freshman Lindsey Mazzola (Upton, Mass.) scored her first collegiate goal after assisting on Kapatoes' tally. Salve Regina's domination of the first half continued with a goal from freshman Marissa Gagnon (Smithfield, R.I.) at 24:52.
Salve Regina (8-6; 3-4 CCC) added two goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half, both coming off penalty corners. Freshman midfielder Allison Gold (Greenlawn, N.Y.) scored her second and third goals of the season as Kapatoes directed corner opportunities through senior forward Kelly Burke (Georgetown, Mass.) both times.
Salve Regina led 5-0 before the visitors got on the board.
Western New England (5-11; 0-7 CCC), which had no penalty corners in the first 35 minutes, generated 10 in the second half while the Seahawks managed only the two they scored on early in the period. Junior Jaynie Mueller (Colorado Springs, Colo.) scored both Golden Bear goals on penalty corners. Brook Kumnick (Granby, Conn.) directed passes to Shelby Van Huysen (Killingworth, Conn.) who shuttled the ball to Mueller for her scoring drives.
Murphy McCann (Westerly, R.I.) made five saves to improve to 8-6 on the season while Kaitlyn Hall (Pawtucket, R.I.) made eight stops in a losing effort. With the win Salve Regina takes hold of the fourth place in the league standings ahead of Gordon College.
The Seahawks are on the road Saturday at first-place Endicott College while the Golden Bears host Nichols College at 1 p.m.
