Seahawks fall to Statesman in season opener

The Salve Regina men's ice hockey team dropped a 10-0 decision to Hobart during its season opener on Friday night.

Hobart senior goalie Nick Broadwater stopped all 11 shots that he faced to secure his eighth career shutout. He tied the program record for career shutouts set by Keith Longo '08. Eight different Statesmen scored in the victory. First-year Mac Olson led Hobart with two goals and two assists, and sophomore Tommaso Traversa notched two goals and an assist.

Senior Frank Salituro and first-year Bo Webster each logged a goal and two assists, and sophomore Ryan Michel earned two assists. The Statesmen outshot the Seahawks 58-11. Hobart limited Salve Regina (0-1) to just three shots in the first period and three in the second.

Traversa started the scoring just 5:05 into the game, when he capitalized on a rebound off a shot by sophomore Terrence O'Neill. At 8:01, Salituro made it 2-0 after he tipped in a pass from Michel from the blue line during a power play.

Just 24 seconds into the second stanza, sophomore Brad McBride capitalized on a power-play, scoring his first goal as a Statesman. At 9:17 in the second, Webster pushed a pass ahead to Olson who fired into the top right corner of the goal for his first collegiate goal, making it 4-0. Then Webster scored his own goal off a pass from Olson with 37 seconds left in the middle period.

The Statesmen rattled off five goals in the final period. Just 51 seconds in, senior Brad Richard notched his first goal of the season, and sophomore Bronson Kovacs followed blasting a shot into the back of the net from the blue line 2:16 into the third period to make it 7-0. Traversa and Olson tallied their second goals of the night, and senior Bobby Hannah capped the scoring at 12:08.

The Seahawks best scoring chance came with about 11 minutes left in the game. Cameron Gaudet (Burlington, Mass.) broke through for a one-on-one with the Hobart goalie. Broadwater stepped up to make the save and secure the shutout.

Mike McDonald (Whitby, Ontario) stopped 39 shots in 47:14 for Salve Regina. David Chiokadze (Langhorne, Pa.) came in for the final 12:46 and made nine saves.

The Seahawks will return to the ice tomorrow night (7 p.m.) at Nazareth.
