Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - After claiming an early 1-0 lead, the Salve Regina men's ice hockey team was edged by Western New England 2-1 during an Eastern College Athletic Conference Northeast (ECACNE) contest on Saturday night. The Seahawks' record now stands at 2-5-0 overall and 1-2-0 during ECACNE play, while the Golden Bears improve to 4-1-0 on the season, including a perfect 3-0-0 mark in the conference.
With 1 minute and 29 seconds left in the second stanza, Martin atoned for his hitting from behind minor penalty that gave Salve Regina a power-play by taking a feed from sophomore Brandon Stroud immediately after he exited the box and skated uncontested to the right-circle where he snapped a wrist shot over the right shoulder of Seahawks goaltender David Chiokadze (Langhorne, Pa.).
Moments before, Salve Regina had a chance to take a 2-1 lead but Marc Biggs' power play slap shot from the left point hit the post and caromed across to the opposite side.
The teams traded goals in the first period as William Gomolinski (Western Springs, Ill.) gave Salve Regina a 1-0 lead with his fifth goal of the season just 2:33 after the opening face-off, taking a pass from Michael Naso. However, junior Chris Connors knocked in a rebound over Chiokadze left leg-pad from the top of the goal-crease for his second goal to get the equalizer 4:21 later.
Martin had a golden opportunity to get an insurance goal five minutes into the third period, but he was stymied by Chiokadze from close range.
Chiokadze, who ended up with 28 saves, was pulled in favor of an extra skater for 95 seconds out of the final 2:01 but couldn't get the tying goal to send the game into overtime.
