Freshmen spark Seahawks to 6-1 win over JWU

Box Score

NEWPORT, R.I. - Freshman Peter Gintoli (Monroe, Conn.) scored a pair of goals, while classmate Cameron Gaudet (Burlington, Mass.) notched his first collegiate hat trick, as the Salve Regina men's ice hockey team skated to a 6-1 victory over Johnson & Wales during an Eastern College Athletic Conference Northeast (ECACNE) contest at Portsmouth Abbey on Wednesday night. The win was the second straight for the Seahawks who improve to 4-6-0 overall and 2-2-0 in the conference. With the loss, the Wildcats fall to 2-7-0 on the season and 1-3-0 during ECACNE play.

In addition to Gintoli and Gaudet, freshman Liam Centrella (Andover, Mass.) also scored for Salve Regina while sophomore Michael Naso (Londonderry, N.H.) dished-out a pair of assists. Freshman goaltender David Chiokadze (Landhorne, Pa.) had an excellent night in net, stopping 41-of-42 shots to improve to 2-3-0 on the season.

Senior Trevor Jewell (Muskegon, Mich.) scored the lone goal for the Wildcats, while senior Danny Kaufmann (Scotch Plains, N.J.) and sophomore Alex Porrier (Rutland, Vt.) earned assists. Senior goalie Matt Cooper (Perrysburg, Ohio) took the loss in net despite making a game-high 42 saves on the night.

Gintoli gave the Seahawks the lead at the 14:40 mark of the opening period, stealing the puck at mid ice, racing to the net, deking the goalie to his left and then wrapping the puck around to finish on the right side for the short-handed score.

The Wildcats tied the game at one-all with a 4-on-3 power-play marker just 1:13 into the middle frame when Kaufmann and Porrier set up Jewell for a slapshot from just inside the blue line.

The Seahawks regained the lead just over five and a half minutes later when Gintoli scored his second goal of the game on a wrister from the left circle for what eventually stood up as the game-winning score.

Salve Regina stretched the lead to 3-1 before the close of the second period when Naso skated down the right side, slice across the middle and then slipped a pretty pass to Gaudet who finished to give SRU a two-goal advantage.

The Seahawks then put the game away with three third period goals. Watkins and Davis set up Centrella for the first goal of the frame, while Gaudet followed with a pair of markers, including a power-play tally to complete his first collegiate hat trick, wraping-up the 6-1 victory.

Both teams return to conference action on Saturday, as the Wildcats travel to face Western New England at 7:45 p.m., and the Seahawks hit the road to faceoff versus Curry at 4:35 p.m.
