NEWPORT, R.I. - Senior Zachary Rosenfeld (Easton, Conn.) earned two points with a doubles and singles victory as Salve Regina University men's tennis defeated visiting Assumption College, 6-3, in non-league action.
The Seahawks enjoyed an early 2-0 lead by benefit of only five Greyhound players, forcing a default for Assumption at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles.
Rosenfeld and junior co-captain Aaron Isch (Tolland, Conn.) took care of No. 1 doubles with an 8-1 score over the Cumberland, R.I. pairing of juniors Matt Drolet and Pat Murray. Seahawk freshmen Mike Gallerani (Fairfield, Conn.) and Malcolm Marshall (Topsham, Maine) played at No. 2 doubles for the first time and pushed the Seahawks up 4-0 with an 8-3 win.
Isch clinched the fifth point to decide the match with a straight-set win at No. 2 singles. Rosenfeld followed in straight sets at No. 1 singles, winning the last three games for a 6-4,7-5 score.
Greyhound junior Richard Jakiel (New Britain, Conn.) took Gallerani out at No. 4 singles in straight sets. Marshall and Colin Gunning (Norwell, Mass.) both went three sets in their respective singles matches at No. 5 and No. 3, but Jerry Reilly (Greenville, R.I.) and Murray both emerged victorious in the third sets.
Salve Regina (3-13) hosts Wentworth Institute of Technology at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, with both teams needing a win to have a chance at a playoff spot. Assumption (4-11) concluded its regular season today.
