Seahawks take two at Western Invitational

DANBURY, Conn. (Sep. 1) – The Salve Regina University volleyball team earned a pair of victories on Saturday, defeating Western Connecticut State and Johnson & Wales by identical 3-1 scores during the second day of the Western Invitation at Feldman Arena.

The Seahawks finished second in the tournament, finishing with a 2-1 overall mark. In addition, senior Megan Clancy (Chelmsford, Mass.) was selected as a member of the All-Tournament Team. 

In the day's first match, Salve Regina University rebounded from a Friday night loss to Brandeis by defeating the host Colonials 3-1.  In game one, Salve Regina called a timeout with the score tied 15-15 and then went on a 5-1 run to take 20-16 lead.  Western narrowed the margin to 20-19 behind the hitting of senior Paxton Thornton (Sharon, Conn.), but the Seahawks held on down the stretch for a 25-22 win.

Western rushed out to an early 8-3 lead in game two and seemed to maintain a five-point margin throughout, evening the match at 1-1 with a 25-20 win.  Games three and four were both tightly contested, with neither team establishing substantial leads, but Salve Regina made the most of its opportunities at the end of each game, winning both by the same 26-24 score.

In the second match of the day, Salve Regina carried its momentum from the morning win over Western and downed Johnson & Wales 25-16 in game one.  Johnson & Wales re-grouped to take game two 25-23 to tie the match at 1-all, but Salve Regina captured a 2-1 lead with a 25-21 win in game three.  With the score tied 24-24 in the match's fourth game, Salve Regina scored two straight points to take the game and the match.  The Seahawks conclude the weekend with back to back wins and a 2-1 record, after suffering an opening night loss to Brandeis.
