NEWPORT, R.I. - Senior Karlee Walther (Natick, Mass.) improved her singles record on the season to 5-0 for Salve Regina University women's tennis, but the Seahawks fell to defending Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) champion Endicott College, 8-1, today in Newport.
Walther watched as 10 teammates played doubles, three pairs scoring for the match. Endicott took 8-0 decisions at first and second doubles behind Natalie Egbert (Gorham, Maine) / Chrissy Martel (Westbrook, Conn.) and Emilie Cloutier (Lewiston, Maine) / Gina Pinciaro (Beverly, Mass.), respectively.
Salve Regina's third doubles pair of Elizabeth Liguori (Westerly, R.I.) and Erica Shay (Concord, Mass.) trailed 6-3 in their eight-game pro-set before winning four straight games. Amy Heacox (Marion, Mass.) and Brittany Potter (Bedford, N.H.) held on for a 9-7 victory and the doubles sweep.
All singles matches were decided in straight sets, with Walther claiming the only point for Salve Regina in the final match of the day.
The Seahawks host the 28th annual Women's Grass Court Doubles Championships at the Tennis Hall of Fame on Saturday. Play begins at 1 p.m.
