PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Junior Elizabeth Liguori (Westerly, R.I.) secured two points for Salve Regina University women's tennis as the Seahawks defeated Rhode Island College, 7-2, in non-league action.
The Seahawks (1-1) took two of three in doubles to hold a 2-1 advantage. Junior Ana Gwozdz (Taunton, Mass.) paired with classmate Liguori for an 8-1 win at second doubles. Sophomore Erica Shay (Concord, Mass.) and senior Shannon O'Brien (Gorham, Maine) won by the same score at third doubles.
Salve Regina won five of six in singles action en route to the club's first win of the 2012 campaign. Senior Karlee Walther (Natick, Mass.) did not lose a game (6-0, 6-0) at No. 4 singles. Liguori, O'Brien and Shay also picked up singles victories at No. 2, 5 and 6 singles, respectively.
Sophomore Elizabeth DiFilippo (West Chester, Pa.) took the final point when she held on for a 6-3,5-7,1-0(10-8) decision at third singles over Sarah Goodwin (Greenville, R.I.). The Anchorwomen, who picked up two decisions from freshman Sadie Campanella (Chepachet, R.I.), fell for the third time in three tries this season.
"Ana and Liz did a great job setting each other up in doubles today," said Seahawk head coach Ed Habershaw. "Both had lots of opportunities to finish points at the net. In singles, Ana continued to use approach shots to set up her net game; Campanella outlasted her in many games that featured multiple deuce points. Liguori rallied from 3-0 down in her second set with her steady baseline play."
Salve Regina hosts the first Commonwealth Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) match-up of the season tomorrow in Newport when the Lions of Eastern Nazarene visit for a 1 p.m. match.
