Box Score Marlborough, Mass. - Salve Regina's men's ice hockey team held off a feisty Becker squad for a 6-4 win, Saturday night.
The win lifts the Seahawks to 6-9-1 (3-3 ECAC), while the Ice Hawks fall to 9-8, (0-6 ECAC).
Salve Regina got the scoring started just 1:04 into game when Scott McMenimen (Exeter, N.H.) beat Becker goalie Gregg Hussey (Medford, Mass.) top shelf. The Seahawks added to the lead 2:14 later when Alec Butler (Marlborough, Mass.) scored on a slap-shot from the left point, giving Salve Regina an early 2-0 advantage.
Becker cut the Seahawks lead in half when Dan Kane (Staten Island, N.Y.) scored a power-play goal with 11:50 remaining in the period. Salve Regina responded in the 13th minute when freshman Marc Biggs (Dallas, Texas) collected rebound in front, sliding it past Hussey for the 3-1 lead. Becker senior David Graham (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) netted a power-play goal with 2:56 remaining in the period, sending the Seahawks to the locker room with a 3-2 advantage.
The Seahawks increased their lead to 4-2, 8:26 into the second period on a breakaway goal from Zakerie Thompson (Rochester, Mich.). Salve Regina continued to pepper Hussey with shots, going in front 5-2 when Butler scored his second goal of the game on a bouncing punk.
Becker finally responded in the 16th minute when Mark Lotito (Staten Island, N.Y) beat Salve goalie Mike McDonald (Whitby, Ontario) on his blocker side, cutting the deficit to 5-3. The Ice Hawks added their third power-play goal of the game with just 00:22 remaining in the period, when Korby Anderson (Owantonna, Minn) ripped a wrist shot into the top right corner of the net, making the score 5-4 after two periods.
The Ice Hawks had their chances to tie the game in the third period, but went 0-4 on power-play opportunities. Salve Regina iced the game with 00:19 remaining in regulation when David Watkins (Natick, Mass.) scored on an empty net, securing the 6-4 win for the Seahawks.
The Seahawks return to the ice when they host conference rivals, Nichols, on January 23 at the Portsmouth Abbey. The opening face off is set for 7:35 p.m.
