Nichols shuts out Salve Regina

PORTSMOUTH, R.I. – The Salve Regina men's ice hockey team suffered just its second shutout of the season as the Seahawks fell to Nichols, 1-0, at Portsmouth Abbey Wednesday evening.

With the loss, Salve Regina slips to 6-10-1 on the season and 3-4 in the ECAC Northeast while Nichols moves to 11-7 on the year and 4-3 in the conference.

Freshman Tyler Beasley (Indianapolis, Ind.) was the difference in the game as Beasley scored on a power play just 1:06 into the second period off an assist from sophomores Mike Schwartz (Long Beach, N.Y.) and Joe Sposit (Cleveland, Ohio).

Bison goalie Alex Larson (Madison, Ala.) was able to hold off a barrage of shots by the Seahawks to keep the hosts off the board, including double-digit saves in the first and third period. Larson stopped 13 in the opening period and 12 in the final frame.

Salve Regina was able to kill Nichols final power play opportunity with 2:29 to play in the game to keep the score 1-0, but the Seahawks were unable to find their equalizer despite three shots in the final two minutes of play.

Freshman Marc Biggs (Plano, Texas) had a game-high five shots.

Senior goalie Mike McDonald (Whitby, Ontario) stopped 14 shots in the net for Salve Regina while Larson finished the game with 32 saves.

Salve Regina returns to the ice when the Seahawks host Wentworth on Saturday, January 26. The puck is set to drop at 4:35 p.m. at the Portsmouth Abbey.
