Seahawks soar over Beacons in ECAC East action

Box Score

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. – The Salve Regina women's ice hockey team got back on track with a 4-1 win over Eastern College Athletic Conference Women's East opponent, UMass. – Boston, Saturday night at St. George's Ice Arena.

With the win, the Seahawks even their season record at 3-3 while improving to 2-3 in the league. The Beacons drop to 1-5-1 overall and 1-4 in the conference.

After a relatively quiet first period, the Seahawks finally broke through as junior Sarah Markey (Ashland, Mass.) got the rebound off of classmate's Michaela Chiuccariello (Winchester, Mass.) shot and put it back in the net to give Salve Regina 1-0 lead with 1:19 to play in the first. Just under a minute later, freshman Amanda Cronin (Medfield, Mass.)  took control of the puck a quick break away at center ice and sent the puck high over the Beacons' goalie to give the Seahawks a 2-0 lead after the first period.

Midway through the second period, senior Katie Loiselle (Glocester, R.I.) stepped on the ice on a shift change and set up sophomore Samantha Fallon (Pembroke, Mass.) in front of the net to cut the Seahawk lead to 2-1. Salve Regina answered quickly however, as junior Taylor Shepherd (Quincy, Mass.) won the faceoff and got the puck in the offensive zone for the Seahawks. Freshman Michelle Homes (Goffstown, N.H.) fed the puck to sophomore Danielle Phalon (Stoneham, Mass.) who sent it high past the Beacon goalie to push Salve Regina's lead to 3-1.

Phalon gave the Seahawks a little extra breathing room 11:10 into the third with her second goal of the game off a quick pass from Holmes after a scrum for control of the puck in front of the net.

Salve Regina's defense held off the Beacons to come away with the 4-1 win to snap a two-game skid.

Freshman Colleen Marcik (Madison, Conn.) made 16 saves in net for Salve Regina while her counterpart; junior Moe Bradley (Swampscott, Mass.) made 20 saves for the Beacons.

Salve Regina returns to the ice when the Seahawks host Trinity (Conn.) on Tuesday at 7 p.m. while the Beacons host Bowdoin College on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
