Box Score

PORTSMOUTH, R.I. – Sophomore Cameron Gaudet (Burlington, Mass.)  broke a 3-3 tie with just over four minutes to play in the third period to lift the Salve Regina men's ice hockey team to a 5-3 victory over Stonehill, Tuesday night at the Portsmouth Abbey. With the win, Salve Regina improves to 2-0 on the season while Stonehill evens its record at 1-1.

After a pair of penalties five seconds apart evened the skaters at 5-on-5, sophomore Robbie Dorgan (Ossining, N.Y.) took a quick pass from classmate Richard Harris (Grand Island, N.Y.) to tie the game at 3-3 with 7:25 left in regulation. With just over four minutes to play, junior Michael Naso's (Londonberry, N.H.) shot was stopped by the Skyhawks' goalie to force a face off in Salve Regina's offensive zone. Junior John Scorcia (Hudson, Fla.) won the draw and pushed the puck to sophomore Marc Biggs (Dallas, Texas) who fed it to Gaudet for the game-winning goal.

Sophomore goalie David Chiokadze (Langhorne, Pa.) made a pair of saves in final three minutes to keep the Skyhawks from tying the game. With 1:15 left to play, Stonehill pulled its goalie in favor of an extra attacker but could not get a shot off. Sophomore Shaun Altshuller (Nepean, Ontario) sealed the victory for the Seahawks with an empty net goal with 26 seconds left in the game.

Salve Regina won the final face off of the game and controlled the puck as time expired.

Scorcia scored his first goal of the season nine minutes into the first period to give Salve Regina a 1-0 lead but Stonehill quickly had an answer as Dorgan scored his first of the contest to knot the game at 1-1 just two minutes later. The Skyhawks took their only lead of the game with 7:35 left in the second period off a goal from sophomore Travis Army (Englewood, Colo.) but Scorcia tied the game with less than three minutes until the end of the second period with his second goal of the game. Scorcia controlled the puck off a pair of passes from seniors Trey Rasmussen (Vineyard Haven, Mass.) and Alex Barr (West Milford, N.J.).

Salve Regina took a 3-2 lead just 1:30 later as sophomore Peter Gintoli (Monroe, Conn.) fired home his first goal of the season. Biggs and Scorcia each tried to push the lead to 4-2 before the end of the second period, but freshman goalie Joshua Hickey (Pittsburgh, Pa.) made three saves in the final 1:30.

Stonehill tied the game with 11:15 to play in the third before Gaudet and Altshuller put the game away for Salve Regina.

Chiokadze made 19 saves in the win for SRU, including eight in the first period while his Skyhawk counterpart, Hickey, had 22 saves in the contest.

Stonehill returns to action on Thursday, Nov. 7 as the Skyhawks host Plymouth State at 6 p.m. while the Seahawks return to the ice when they host Suffolk in both school's ECAC Northeast opener on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 3 p.m.
