Box Score PORTSMOUTH, R.I. – Freshman Peter Gintoli (Monroe, Conn.) stole the show on Salve Regina's men's ice hockey senior night as the freshman netted his first career hat trick as the Seahawks soared past Becker, 7-1, Wednesday night at Portsmouth Abbey.
Just over nine minutes into the opening period, Gintoli took an initial shot that was saved by Becker (10-12-1, 1-10-1 ECAC NE) starting goalie, freshman Gregg Hussey (Medford, Mass.). Sophomore John Scorcia (Hudson, Fla.) got the rebound to junior Trey Rasmussen (Vineyard Haven, Mass.) who sent it to Gintoli as he was positioned in front of the net to push it past Hussey.
With 1:10 showing in the first, freshman Liam Centrella (Andover, Mass.) put the Seahawks up 2-0 before Gintoli netted his second goal of the game 22 seconds later off assists from Scorcia and freshman Marc Biggs (Plano, Texas).
Biggs pushed the host's lead to 4-0 9:10 into the second frame as he intercepted a pass from the Hawks and beat two defenders to send the puck past the new Hawk goalie, junior Shaun Millerick (Hampton, N.H.).
Becker cut into the Salve Regina lead after taking advantage of its third power play opportunity of the game. After winning the face off for the Hawks in their offensive zone, senior David Graham (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) took an assist from freshman Gerald Owen (Chesapeake, Va.) and junior Korby Anderson (Owantonna, Mich.) to put Becker on the board, 4-1.
Gintolia answered Graham's goal, putting the finishing touches on his hat trick taking a feed from Scorcia and sailing it past Millerick on a breakaway with 10 seconds to play in the middle frame.
Sophomore Michael Naso (Londonberry, N.H.) gave the Seahawks this biggest lead of the game until that point 4:29 into the final period with his eighth goal of the season off a feed from Gintoli and junior David Watkins (Natick, Mass.). Scorcia put the final touches on the seven-goal offensive effort with his eighth goal of the season.
Freshman goalie David Chiokadze (Langhorne, Pa.) played one his best games of his short career in the net for Salve Regina, stopping 26 shots for his third win of the year. Chiokadze faced his biggest test with just over 11 minutes to play in the third period as the Seahawks found themselves down two skaters for just over four minutes of action. Chiokadze stopped three shots while the Seahawks were shorthanded to keep the Hawks off the board in the third period.
Hussey made 12 saves for the Hawks while suffering the loss playing just the first period.
Salve Regina returns to the ice when the Seahawks wrap up their regular season at Wentworth on Saturday, Feb. 16. The opening faceoff is set for 1 p.m.
