NEWPORT, R.I. - Head Coach Kevin Gilmartin has announced the hiring of Casey Goff to join the Salve Regina football program as the team's new defensive coordinator and the promotion of Michael Weick to the full time linebackers and special teams coach, as well as the recruiting coordinator.
Goff comes to Salve Regina after a successful three-year tenure at King's College where he served as the defensive coordinator and linebackers' coach. In 2012, Goff coached two-time all-conference selection senior Ryan Cordingly while helping Ryan Kelly to an all-conference selection his senior year. While at King's, Goff also served as the team's strength coach as well as serving as the Intermetro Wellness Center supervisor.
Prior to his time at King's, Goff spent three years as an assistant coach at NCAA DIII power Washington & Jefferson College. With the Presidents, Goff served as the special teams coordinator and defensive line coach in 2007 before becoming the co-defensive coordinator and strength and conditioning coach in 2008 and defensive line coach for the 2009 season. Under his guidance, W&J made three-straight NCAA playoff appearances. In 2009, Goff's defense led the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) in six defensive categories, including total defense.
Goff was instrumental in the development of All-American and national runner-up in total sacks, Jacob Bloomhuff. Bloomhuff tied the NCAA DIII mark in 2009 with an average of 1.32 sacks per game. The Presidents' defense was ranked in the Top 25 nationally in four defensive categories, including seventh in sacks per game, averaging 3.3 sacks.
In 2008, Goff helped the team to a quarterfinals appearance in the NCAA playoffs. He joined Matt Caponi as the co-defensive coordinator and helped the Presidents rank seventh in NCAA DIII in pass efficiency defense (162.8) while leading the PAC in three defensive categories.
In his first season with the Presidents, Goff helped the team to a PAC championships and a berth in the NCAA playoffs.
Prior to his stint with the Presidents, Goff served as an assistant coach at Rhodes College (Tenn.) for the 2006 season. That season, Rhodes ranked fifth in the nation in total defense (199.6 ypg) and led the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference with 32 sacks.
Goff came to Rhodes after working with Cortland State University as the defensive line coach for two seasons. Goff helped the Dragons to a berth in the 2005 NCAA Division III playoffs and coached a defense that ranked second in the nation in run defense, limiting the opposing rush to just 40.9 yards per game. He was also influential in the development of All-American and East Region Defensive Player of the Year, Adam Haas.
Goff brings experience in coaching at the DII level from Mansfield University as well as knowledge in DIII from Susquehanna and Muhlenberg College.
In his playing career, Goff was a three-year letter winner for the Susquehanna Crusaders as a defensive lineman. In 1999, Goff helped the Crusaders to a Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Commonwealth championship. Following his senior season, he was awarded the Coaches' Award and remained with the program in 2000 as a student assistant coach.
Goff earned his bachelor's degree in arts and history from Susquehanna in 2000.
Gilmartin has announced the promotion of Weick to a full time assistant for the linebackers and special teams while he will also serve as the recruiting coordinator.
Weick came to the Salve Regina coaching staff in 2012 and worked with the linebackers and special teams. Weick helped lead the team to a 9-2 overall record and a 6-1 slate in the New England Football Conference (NEFC) Boyd Division.
Under Weick's guidance, senior linebacker Anthony Hannon was a First Team All-NEFC honoree and received a First Team All-Eastern College Athletic Conference selection. Hannon led the team with 81 tackles, including 8.5 tackles for loss and 3.0 sacks. Hannon forced and recovered one fumble on the season.
Within the special teams game, Weick was influential in coaching the return specialists which led to All-American honors for second-year player Phil Terio (Trumbull, Conn.).
Following the season, Weick attended the American Football Coaches Association national convention held in Nashville, Tenn. and was selected as a member of the 2013 Future Football Coaches Academy. Weick was one of 31 young coaches in all divisions to participate in the professional development and networking academy.
Weick focuses his recruiting on Massachusetts and the Philadephia, Pa., area and will take over as the recruiting coordinator for the program.
Prior to Salve Regina, Weick spent a year as the linebackers coach and co-strength and conditioning coordinator at Susquehanna University. While at Susquehanna, Weick coached middle linebacker Trevor Terpening to a First Team All Centennial Conference selection. Weick also developed the Crusaders' strength and conditioning program.
Weick started his coaching career as the inside linebackers coach at King's College (Pa.) In addition to his on-field coaching at King's, Weick also helped coordinate position meetings, film study, individual drills and film breakdown. He also aided in the development of All-MAC outside linebacker Ryan Cordingly.
Weick was a four-year starter and 2009 team captain at McDaniel College. Over his 33-game career, he became the program's fourth all-time leader in solo tackles (134) and is fifth in total career tackles (299). He was a two-time All-Centennial Conference linebacker and a 2009 preseason All-America selection. Weick was also named McDaniel College's Athlete of the Year following his senior season.
While a student-athlete at McDaniel, he spent several years working in the football office helping with film breakdown and recruiting organization.
Weick graduated in May 2010 with a degree in exercise science with a minor in education and sports coaching.
