Seahawks take down Bison

Box Score

HARRISVILLE, R.I.  Sophomore Danielle Phalon (Stoneham, Mass.) and freshman Michelle Holmes (Goffstown, N.H.) each scored two goals for Salve Regina, which defeated Nichols, 7-2,  Monday evening in Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Women's East action at Levy Rink.

With the win, the Seahawks improved to 9-5-3 on the season (4-4-0 ECACE). The loss drops the Bison to 3-12-0 (2-6-0 ECACE) on the season.

The Seahawks got things started 1:29 into the first period when sophomore Danielle Phalon (Stoneham, Mass.) had her shot stopped by Nichols junior netminder Tori Gianformaggio (Huntington Beach, Calif.). Sophomore Molly O'Sullivan (Duxbury, Mass.) collected the rebound and potted her first of the season.

Salve Regina doubled its lead two minutes later in similar fashion. Freshman Amanda Cronin (Medfield, Mass.) saw her shot stopped by Gianformaggio with her glove hand, however the puck landed right in front of the net and sophomore Cheyenne Boyd (Phoenix, Ariz.) scored her first goal of the season. Freshman Michelle Holmes (Goffstown, N.H.) was credited with an assist on the play.

Hohmann's second of the season at 8:06 of the first cut the Nichold deficit in half. Murphy played the puck on goal from the neutral zone, and freshman goalie Colleen Marcik (Madison, Conn.) left a big rebound. Hohmann skated around a defender, grabbed the puck, deked the goalie and slid the puck into the left side of the net.

After the two schools retreated to the locker room with the score 2-1 after 20 minutes of play, Salve Regina controlled the rest of the game as it scored five unanswered goals to build a 7-1 lead. Phalon and Holmes each scored twice while junior Michaela Chiuccariello (Winchester, Mass.) netted her seventh of the season. Murphy recorded her eighth of the season with 59 seconds remaining in regulation when she poked the puck past Marcik on a scramble in front.

Gianformaggio tallied 25 saves through two-plus periods of action before being lifted for senior Francesca Palazzo (Bernardston, Mass.) in the third. She finished with five saves while Marcik picked up 31 saves in the win to move to 6-3-3.

Nichols travels to Amherst on Wednesday for a 7:00 p.m. contest. Salve Regina heads north on Friday to battle Southern Maine at 4 p.m.
