Scorcia scores four in Seahawk win over Golden Bears

Box Score

PORTSMOUTH, R.I. - Salve Regina University senior forward John Scorcia (Hudson, Fla.) scored his first four goals of the season to lead the Seahawks to a 7-2 victory over the Golden Bears of Western New England University in Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Northeast action at the Portsmouth Abbey.

Salve Regina improves to 3-2-2 overall and 3-2-0 in league play while Western New England loses its fourth straight and falls to 1-5-1 overall and 1-4-0 in conference.

Both teams had a goal in the first period. Scorcia scored an unassisted shorthanded goal midway through the first 20 minutes. With three seconds left in the opening period, senior Brandon Stroud (Clarksville, Ind.) tied the score at 1-1 with his first goal of the season.

Scorcia's second goal came in the outset of the second period. James Malone (Beachwood, N.J.) and Marc Biggs (Plano, Texas) assisted on the go-ahead tally at 1:32. Junior Alex Pompeo (Hingham, Mass.) scored the eventual game-winner 26 seconds later, grabbing a share of the team lead in goals (4) with Malone and Peter Gintoli (Monroe, Conn.). Scorcia was only halfway there at that point.

Salve Regina had a power-play at 11:57 in the middle period when Will Norris (Lynbrook, N.Y.) was whistled for a five-minute major, but Pompeo took a tripping penalty 14 seconds later to even each side. Scorcia had his hat trick 13 seconds after that for a 4-1 Seahawk lead.

Lucas Sousa (Billerica, Mass.) added a power-play goal before Norris' penalty expired. Salve Regina had a 6-1 lead before the end of the second period when Evan Schmidbauer (San Diego, Calif.) scored his first collegiate goal.

The five-goal second period came on just 10 shots for the Seahawks. It caused the Golden Bears to replace starting goaltender Scott Brown (Sewickley, Pa.) with Tim Carr (Pine Bush, N.Y.) for the final period.

Scorcia lit the lamp one more time, at 12:48, to give Salve Regina a 7-1 lead. The Seahawks have scored seven goals in each of their last two games, both with Jake Williams (Montreal, Quebec) stopping the opposition.

Williams finished with 20 saves to improve to 2-0-0 on the season. Dane Genord (Grand Blanc, Mich.) scored his third goal of the season to make the final 7-2.

Salve Regina plays its annual Colby-Bowdoin classic after Thanksgiving break. Western New England travels to Manhattanville on Tuesday.
