Box Score

Middletown, Conn. - The Wesleyan University Men's Ice Hockey team (0-1-2) took to the ice Saturday afternoon to face Salve Regina (3-4-1), but were unable to complete their comeback as they suffered their first loss of the season in a 5-4 contest.

Salve Regina got on the board first with a late first period goal by senior Peter Gintoli. The Seahawks extended their lead in the second period where they put up two more goals, the first scored by senior Alex Pompeo which was assisted by Gintoli and junior Jonathan Felteau. The second goal was scored by sophomore Pat Thompson and was assisted by  Kyle Moore and Joseph Yeadon.

Down 3-0 late into the second period the Cardinals went on the attack and began chipping away at the Salve lead. senior Alex Carlacci got the Cardinals on the board with 6:16 left in the second period, and less than 30 seconds later junior James Kline scored on the power play to bring the Salve lead down to one. Caracci's goal was assisted by sophomore Jordan Jacze and senior Jaren Taenaka. Kline's goal was assisted by Carlacci and freshman Chad Malinowski. Wesleyan went into the third training 3-2.

Salve began to build up their lead again in the third as they took a 5-2 lead with goals from Freshmen Nick Cyr and Joseph Yeadon. Cyr's goal was assisted by junior Tommy Evangelista and senior Shaun Altshuller, while Yeadon's was assisted by Moore.

Jancze scored with 7:36 remaining in the game and brought the Salve lead down to 5-3. His goal was assisted by freshman Luke Babcock. Wesleyan continued to do their best to try and limit the Salve scoring opportunities. junior Daniel Weiss, who started in goal for the Cardinals, made a number of great saves in the third to help keep the Cardinals in the game. He finished with 25 saves on the day. The Salve goaltender, freshman Blake Wojtala also made some great saves in the game, and finished with 29 on the day.

Down by two and with just over a minute remaining, Wesleyan pulled Weiss to give themselves an extra skater, and that decision paid off as senior Jay Matthews scored with 1:18 remaining in the game to pull the Cardinals within one goal. His goal was assisted by freshman Chris White. Wesleyan got some good shots on goal in the final minute and played great defense to stop Salve from scoring on the empty net, but unfortunately for the Cardinals they could not put another past Wojtala.
