Seahawks win fifth straight; 2-0 over Becker

Box Score

PORTSMOUTH, R.I. – Alexander Devine (Hampton, N.H.) picked up his second straight shutout and the Salve Regina University men's ice hockey team defeated Becker College 2-0 Wednesday night for its fifth straight win.

The Seahawks outshot the Hawks 52-32 and held Becker to 0-7 on the power-play thanks to some superb goaltending from Devine. Both goaltenders played magnificently throughout the evening, making spectacular saves, robbing the opposition of points, but it was Devine, with his third shutout of the season that prevailed.

The first period was scoreless as both teams struggled to find quality scoring chances. Both defenses did a good job of keeping play to the outside and not allowing as passes through the slot.

The grind continued into the second period until a Christoper Pantaleo (Staten Island, N.Y.) high sticking penalty put the Seahawks on the power-play. Evan Schultz (Durham, N.H.) had a shot from the point take a funny bounce off the end boards and hop in front of Hawks netminder Gregg Hussey (Medford, Mass.). Hussy dove at the puck to try and freeze it but Evan Schmidbauer (San Diego, Calif.) was able to chip it over the sprawled goalie and into the net to break the scoreless tie.

The Seahawks had a flurry of chances after scoring the goal but Hussey turned them away.

The Hawks had an excellent chance to tie the game on the power-play when a shot from James Wallace (Levittown, Pa.) angled right to Nicholas McKee (Bakersfield, Calif.) on the rebound and McKee quickly snapped in on goal but Devine made a diving stick save to rob the Hawks captain of the score.

The Seahawks had to kill off even more penalty minutes later in the second when Alex Pompeo (Hingham, Mass.) drew a game misconduct for contact to the head with the Seahawks already playing four on four and a Hawks penalty set to expire. The Seahawks had to skate five on three for a full minute then five on four for the remainder of the major penalty but were able to kill all of it off.

Both teams traded chances in the third period but the clock eventually became the Hawks worst enemy. After the Seahawks killed off a penalty for too many men on the ice the Hawks pulled Hussey with just under a minute to play to get the extra attacker in search of the equalizer.

Instead Evan Schultz found Schmidbauer who carried the puck from center ice and lightly tapped in his second goal on the empty net to seal the victory for Salve Regina.

With the win the Seahawks improve to 10-6-2 overall and 8-3-0 in the ECAC Northeast.

The Hawks meanwhile fall to 4-17-0 and 0-10-0 in the ECAC Northeast.

Both teams will be in action again on Saturday February 14 when the Hawks take on Wentworth at 4 p.m. and the Seahawks take on Nichols at 4:40 p.m.
