NEWPORT, R.I. - After leading 3-0 the Johnson & Wales University softball team had to go to extra innings in order to defeat Salve Regina University 5-4 in a non-conference matchup Tuesday afternoon.

  1. Salve Regina junior Amanda Riley (Barrington, N.H.) went 3-for-3 with two hits, a walk, and three RBI.
  2. Johnson & Wales junior Meghan Gavin (Wallingford, Conn.) went 3-for-3 with two hits, a walk, an RBI, and three runs scored.
  3. Salve Regina junior Elizabeth Lombardo (Thomaston, Conn.) went 3-for-3 with two hits, including a triple, a walk, and two runs scored.

Turning Point
An RBI single from Katie Rufo (Natick, Mass.) scored the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth inning, then later Taylor Fay (East Islip, N.Y.), who pinch ran for Rufo, would score what proved to be the winning run on a Seahawks error with two-outs left. In the bottom of the inning Jaycee Garrigan (Uxbridge, Mass.) would bring home Courtney Nowicki (Northford, Conn.) to draw the Seahawks within one. Megan Guest (Meriden, Conn.) and Francesca Galeazzi (Lynn, Mass.) both singled with two outs to continue the inning and put the tying run at third base, however Lindsey Flourent (New Bedford, Mass.) hit a long fly ball to left field to end the inning.

Quick Hits

  • The Seahawks had four different pitchers in the game. Courtney Latta (Lowell, Mass.) got the start and allowed two runs on five hits through two innings  of work. She was relieved by Ashley D'Antouono (Seaford, N.Y.) who went three innings and allowed one run on three hits and struck out one. Julia Coute (North Dighton, Mass.) pitched two shutout innings, then Andi Nelson (Candia, N.H.) took the loss in the eighth inning, allowing two runs on one hit and striking out one. Nelson falls to 11-7 on the season.
  • Kristin Frost (Pearl City, Hi.) got the start for the Wildcats and went four and a third innings allowing three runs on six hits and striking out five. Noelle Weiss (Hartland, Wisc.) came on in relief and picked up the win to improve to 3-2 on the year. She allowed one run on three hits and struck out one.

Next Up
Salve Regina (17-20) resumes the CCC playoffs on Friday May 4, when they travel to Beverly, Mass., take on Eastern Nazarene in an elimination game at 10 a.m.
Johnson & Wales (28-11) begins the GNAC tournament on Thursday, May 3, at 5:30 p.m.
