Summary
MIDDLETOWN, R.I. - Salve Regina University sophomore netminder Gretchen Howard (Winthrop, Mass.) earned her first career shutout to help the women's ice hockey team to a 4-0 victory over visiting Johnson & Wales University in non-conference action Saturday night.

Series and Streaks
The Seahawks lead 3-1 in the all-time series.

Three Stars of the Game

  1. Salve Regina sophomore Gretch Howard (1-5-0) stopped all nine shots she faced to earn her first victory of the season and first career shutout.
  2. Salve Regina sophomore Suzi Pearson (York, England) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the first period on the powerplay.
  3. Salve Regina sophomore Rebecca Hasting (Boulder, Colo.) scored a goal and handed out an assist.

Key Stat of the Game
The Seahawks earned their second shutout of the season thanks to Howard's nine saves, but also Seahawks defenders stepping in front of shots. The Seahawks blocked 10 shots in the game.

Turning Point
In the waning moments of the second period icing was waved off on a puck that the Seahawks had sent down the ice. The Wildcats controlled the puck for a moment, but it took an odd bounce and skipped back towards the Wildcats net and right to the waiting stick of Carly Bauckham (Westchester, N.Y.) who slapped home a point-blank shot to give the Seahawks a 2-0 lead.

Quick Hits

  • Hasting scored early in the third then setup Taylor Chisholm (Discover Bay, Calif.) for her team-leading sixth of the year late in the period.
  • The Wildcats had an excellent opportunity to tie the game or better late in the first period when Chisholm was whistled for a major boarding penalty. The Seahawks penalty killers were excellent on the evening however and kept the Wildcats off the scoreboard.
  • Johnson & Wales went 0-for-4 on the powerplay while the Seahawks went 1-for-3 with the man advantage.
  • Freshman goalie Jasmine Mucci (Arlington, Mass.) made four saves to fall to 3-8-3 in net for the Wildcats.

Next Up
Salve Regina (3-10-1) and Johnson & Wales (3-9-3) will meet again tomorrow in Providence, R.I., with a 4 p.m., puckdrop.
