HENNIKER, N.H. – The Salve Regina University women's ice hockey team defeated New England College 5-1 in non-conference action on Friday evening at Lee Clement Arena. 

The Pilgrims move to 0-12-1 on the season, while the Seahawks are now 2-9-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Seahawks opened up the scoring early with a goal just under two minutes in as they claimed a 1-0 lead. Just over halfway through the period, the Pilgrims committed a penalty giving Salve a power-play opportunity. The Seahawks were able to capitalize on the opportunity and take a 2-0 lead. With about five minutes, remaining in the period Tara Turcotte got New England College on the board with a breakaway goal, to cut the lead to 2-1. Cassandra Kelly picked up an assist on the goal. No more goals were scored in the period as Salve took a one-goal lead into the second.

The second period started slowly as neither team was able to score for the first 10 minutes. The Seahawks broke things open just over halfway through as they scored to take a 3-1 lead. The Pilgrims picked up two power-play opportunities down the stretch but were unable to find the back of the net as the score held at 3-1 going into the final frame of play.

Salve scored early on in the third as they found the back of the net just over two minutes in for a 4-1 lead. Late in the final period, New England College was able to put on some pressure as Ally Freeman shot from the slot went off inside of the pipe. The Seahawks extended their lead to 5-1 with five minutes remaining in regulation off a shot that just barely squeaked in. Turcotte picked up another breakaway with just over two minutes remaining and beat the goalie but was robbed by the pipe. Salve was able to hold strong in the final minutes as they took home a 5-1 victory.

GOALTENDERS
 Cianna Weir made 29 saves in the contest. Madison Jalbert picked up 33 saves for the Seahawks in the win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Cortney Reyes went won 17 of her 26 faceoffs on the night.

WHAT'S NEXT
The Pilgrims head down to Newport, Rhode Island for a rematch against the Seahawks. The game is set to take place at 7:00 pm on Saturday, January 4.
