Box Score HARRISVILLE, R.I. - Graduate student Mel McAleer ended the longest game in Nichols College women's ice hockey history with a goal at 13:53 of overtime to give the No. 3 seeded Bison a 3-2 win over No. 6 Salve Regina University in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) quarterfinals Wednesday night at Levy Rink.
Cassidy Lariviere opened the game's scoring at 9:46 of the first period for the Seahawks, but the Bison scored the next two to take a 2-1 lead into the break. Tori Amaral converted on the power play to knot the score 2-2 in the second for Salve Regina and neither team could find the back of the net in the third, forcing the extra frame.
In overtime McAleer collected a loose puck along the right wing boards, skated into the circle and sent a wrister home to give the Bison the win.
Madison Jalbert made 33 saves in the loss while Victoria Bakopanos stopped 17 shots for the Bison.
Nichols (16-8-1) advance to the CCC semifinals while Salve Regina (5-16-3) sees its season come to a close.
