Seahawks burst in the third with five goals to net 6-1 win

Box Score

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (February 6, 2022) - Salve Regina University men's ice hockey scored five third-period goals including three in the first 2:05, two by senior John McLean (North Andover, Mass.), to breakaway with a 6-1 victory over visiting Nichols College in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at the St. George's Howard Rink on Sunday evening.

The Bison (6-12-1, 5-12-0 CCC) got on the board first with a shorthanded goal from senior captain Curtis Carlson (Lakewood, N.Y.) at 8:31 in the first period. Carlson scooped up a Seahawk turnover at center ice and skated ahead with a slip through the five-hole on netminder Nicholas Latinovich (Vaughan, Ontario). Latinovich recovered to post 25 saves in his 60 minutes between the pipes.

Salve Regina (14-5-1, 11-3-1 CCC) got the equalizer from senior captain George Sennott (North Andover, Mass.) who deposited a rebound off an Ethan DeStefani (Bedford, N.H.) rocket at 18:26 in the first. Sennott's 11th goal of the season puts him one behind junior Mitch Walinski (Lincoln, R.I.) for the team lead in that category.

The teams skated 20 minutes in the middle period without scoring and brought a 1-1 score into the third. Anthony Azzano (Courtice, Ontario) fed Tyler Carangelo (Hamden, Conn.) from the defensive zone to center ice, and Carangelo moved the puck up to McLean who unloaded just inside the blue line on the right to break the deadlock, 29 seconds into the final period. Just 15 seconds later, Cayden Kraus (East St. Paul, Manitoba) cleaned up a shot by Sennott for a two goal lead. McLean made it a three-goal advantage as he took the loose puck after a face-off and drilled it past Korbinian Lutz (Munchen, Germany) at the 2:05 mark.

Sage Englund (Cave Creek, Ariz.) added to the lead six and a half minutes in the final period with helpers from Carangelo and Kaiden Kanderka (Red Deer, Alta.). Kraus finished the scoring with a shorthanded goal at 15:57.

Despite two shorthanded goals in the game, neither team could score on the power play -- Nichols 0-for-4 and Salve Regina 0-for-6.

The Seahawks are 10-1-1 in their last 12 games and will host Wentworth Institute of Technology on Friday, February 11, at 8 p.m.
