Box Score NEWPORT, R.I. -- Salve Regina University graduate student Michael Spencer has become the first player in program history to reach the 2,000-point scoring mark. Spencer had 17 points in Saturday's loss to Western New England in West Springfield, Mass.
Spencer has averaged a conference-leading 23.0 points and 6.5 rebounds for the Seahawks (9-14). He has led the team in scoring in each of his four years. His career high is 45 points, set last season against Roger Williams, and his current season high is 34, which he achieved twice vs Babson College and Suffolk University.
Spencer became the 22nd Salve Regina men's basketball player, not to mention one of three teammates, to reach the 1,000 point mark early in his senior year. His accomplishment of reaching 2,000 points has never been reached by any Salve Regina men's or women's player, etching Spencer's name in stone as Salve Regina's all-time leading scorer… and still counting!
Seahawks head coach Sean Foster had some positive remarks regarding Spencer as he approached this legendary milestone towards the end of an extensively impressive career.
"Our staff and players are so pleased to see Mikey reach the 2,000 point mark for his career… His consistency has stood out as he has led us in scoring all four years in uniform. Mikey's performance in the Seahawk jersey has left a lasting legacy on our program, said Foster. "I am so proud to see his efforts rewarded."
The Seahawks (9-14, 7-9 CCC) return to action Wednesday, February 15th, where they will host the Nichols College Bison (18-5, 14-2 CCC) at Rodgers Recreational Center at 7:30 P.M. Spencer will be honored with senior night festivities prior to the contest as the lone departing athlete on the current Seahawks roster. The Seahawks will also be playing for SalveTHON to assist Miracle Kids at Children's Hospital.
