Seahawks stage epic third-period comeback, finish off Leopards in OT

Box Score

EVERETT, Mass. -- The Salve Regina Seahawks added one to the win column in a hard-earned, white-jersey-bearing overtime win against the Wentworth Leopards on Saturday.

Salve men's hockey battled adversity most of Saturday's game in Everett, trailing the whole way until tying the game with under a minute to go in the third period. That adversity did not come unwarranted with the Seahawks committing eight penalties.

However, the Seahawks dug their way out of the holes they had dug themselves, killing six-of-seven Wentworth power plays and converting on two power play chances of their own. Johnny Mulera (Rockville, Md.) got the Seahawks on the board midway through the second period on the man advantage, and Walter Baumann (Gates Mills, Ohio) added the other power play goal in the third period.

The Seahawks still found themselves trailing late in the third period 3-2 after Baumann's goal, and were fighting hard with the net empty late. After minutes of offensive pressure, the Seahawks got their breakthrough from a reliable source. Joe Kile (Troy, Mich.) ripped a one-timer to knot the game at 3-3 in thrilling fashion to force overtime in a game that the Seahawks dominated in shots (32-17). Kile now ranks T-second in the CCC with 14 goals on the season.

Three-on-three overtime was next between the Leopards and Seahawks. The period did not last long, as freshman forward Logan Calder (Portage La Prairie, Man.) broke away from the paws of the Leopards defense to seal the deal for Salve. Calder's goal was his ninth of the year, and his third game-winning goal of the season (UNE, WNE, Wentworth).

The Seahawks (13-8-1, 11-7-1 CCC) will host the #9 University of New England Nor'easters  (16-5-2, 14-4-1 CCC) on Thursday at 7:45 P.M in a conference showdown. The Seahawks' final home game will be broadcast live from Saint George's exclusively on the Fans Only Sportz Network.
