Box Score NEWPORT, R.I. -- Salve Regina men's basketball added another tally to the win column as the Seahawks edged the Roger Williams Hawks 81-71 led by graduate student leader, Mikey Spencer (Abington, Mass.).
The Rhode Island foes went toe-to-toe for most of the game, a conference showdown that made for an excellent game. The Seahawks came out with the win in a game that included eleven lead changes and lots of scoring runs for either side.
Roger Williams was led by junior guard Mac Annus (Belmont, Mass.) who led the game with an impressive and hard-earned 31 points. Annus only connected on one three-pointer, speaking to his ability to get to the rim with skill and with force.
The Seahawks prevailed over the Hawks on 54.4% shooting, offensively highlighted by Jojo Powers (Dedham, Mass.) who added seven boards and Declan Walmsley (Franklin, Mass.) having dished out seven assists. And again, Salve Regina's scoring was led by Salve's all-time leading scorer Mikey Spencer.
Spencer dazzled once more, scoring 27 points including a trio of three-pointers and a perfect 7/7 from the charity stripe. Spencer took over the game to lead the Seahawks to the win, but a bigger narrative emerges. Spencer is now on the verge of something legendary, sitting at 1,996 career points. Just a couple buckets away from hitting 2,000… insanity.
Salve Regina moves to 7-8 in the conference with three conference games (and three total) left in the season. The Seahawks have the ability to put together back-to-back winning seasons in the CCC for the first time since 2012, when they went 15-3 to take the title.
Spencer will go on to hit the 2,000-point milestone this weekend as the Seahawks (9-13, 7-8 CCC) go to visit Western New England (16-5, 12-3 CCC) on Saturday.
